Maine High School Football Scoreboard - Week 1

by Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

The 50th anniversary of the first and only NFL game to be played in Maine was celebrated Saturday during the Bangor/Skowhegan game played in Bangor. The New York Giants played the Green Bay Packers in a pre-season game on September 5, 1959 at Bangor's Garland Street football field. The Portland Press Herald takes a look at the historic event that marked the first-season of Vince Lombardi as the Packers head coach.

Last night, Bangor beat defending Eastern Maine Class A champ Skowhegan 41-12. Check-out the game wrap-up from the Bangor Daily News.

John Bapst was proclaimed state champs in 1964, 1965 and 1976 before the state playoff system was created. Saturday the Crusaders (11-1) beat previously unbeaten Winthrop (11-1) 21-14 to win the Class C title. Click here for game story.

By Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

Mt. Desert Island nearly didn't make it out its opening round of the Maine high school football Pine Tree Conference Class B game against Waterville. Mt. Desert Island moved on the semifinals thanks to its defense that shutdown a two-point conversion with one-tenth of a second to play to preserve a 28-27 win. Mt. Desert Island improves to 7-1 while Waterville ends its season at 3-5.Click here to read a game recap.

Storied Maine High School Football Rivalry Reduced To A Scrimmage

By Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

Maine's high school football season begins next Friday, but don't tell fans of Cony and Gardiner. The two teams, who have met 130 times in a rivalry dating back to 1892, will turn-up for the regular season by scrimmaging each other. However, there is also some sadness, because this will be the ONLY time these two meet this year.

School officials have decided to take the match-up off the regular season schedule because of conflicts caused by Maine's post-season. Last year a well rested Cony team beat Gardiner 32-14 in a game that came just six days after Gardiner's appearance in the Class B state championship game.

Bonny Eagles Wins Another Maine Class A Trophy

Two of the best Maine high school football teams in the last four years met once again Saturday to decide the state's Class A championship.

For the third time in the last four years it was Bonny Eagle taking home the title by beating defending 2006 champ Lawrence 34-14 before 7,200 fans at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland. The win snapped Lawrence's 22-game win streak.

This one was never in doubt as Bonny Eagle raced out to a 27-0 halftime lead.
