Kentucky High School Football Player with One-Arm Wins 2010 Rudy Award

Having a bad day?

We all have them.

I had one yesterday, but then I get a news release announcing the winner of the 2010 High School Rudy Award.  Then after learning about Chance Anthony of Breckinridge High School in Hardinsburg, Kentucky, I got the feeling that feeling sorry for myself wasn't the thing I should be doing.

Anthony was born without the lower part of his right arm.  That has not prevented the senior from being a contributing member of the school's football and basketball teams.

The two-way starter caught his first touchdown pass last season during the school's homecoming game. He can also bench press 235-pounds...basically with one arm!

“One hand or not, you can still catch a football and still catch a basketball,” said Anthony. “Sometimes my friends forget I’ve only got one hand. I do as much as anyone else at school. It’s how you deal with adversity that counts. If somebody gives you the opportunity, you better take it and run. Don’t look back and question why. I know I’m going to look back and really appreciate Coach giving me the opportunity to be the best I could be.”

Anthony, who won a $10,000 scholarship, was chosen for the 2nd annual award from 250 nominees.

The High School Football Rudy Award is named after Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger, who became a not-so-famous, famous player while at Notre Dame while only playing two downs as a 5-6, 165 pound walk-on.

The first runner-up was Cody Rye of Ironwood, Michigan...2nd runner-ups were Kyle Wilcos of Seffner, Florida and Tray Waite of Warren, Ohio.

Hoover has now won 41 straight region games, but Friday night, according to The Birmingham News, the streak was put to the test. Hoover stormed back from a 21-0 deficit to beat Spain Park in a battle of unbeatens.

Hoover needed every second of its game Friday night with Camden County (Kingsland, GA). The Buccaneers stormed back from a 27-14 third quarter deficit and kicked a field goal on the last play of the game to pull-out a 30-27 victory road victory. The Birmingham News has all of the comeback details.

For the second week in a row, Thomasville has taken down a defending champ. Friday night the Tigers beat defending 4A champ UMS-Wright 42-37. UMS-Wright entered the game ranked #1 in 4A. Last week, Thomasville beat defending 1A champ Sweet Water.

T.R. Miller did something that ten opponents couldn't do to defending 3A champ Leeds last season. The Tigers beat Leeds 27-7 Saturday night in the Champions Challenge in Montgomery. High School Sports IS Big Business in Alabama

For years I've been talking about how the commercialization of high school football isn't necessarily good for the sport! Click here to see my commentary on the 2007 "Made for TV" football game between Northwestern (FL) and Southlake Carroll (TX).

The latest head shaking story for me comes from Alabama where the state's high school athletic association, that recently moved its Super Six football championships from Birmingham to Tuscaloosa and Auburn, is building revenue streams at a pace that left the AHSAA with a $2.3 million surplus at the end of 2007-08 according to a report on al.com. Of course Alabama isn't the only state capitalizing on the popularity of high school sports. And, for the record, I'm not against such financial windfalls. I just hope that the money trickles down to ALL of the schools in the state.

In this day-and-age, money needs to be given to the education of students. Remember, sports is part of the education process...not the other way around!

Alabama High School Football Championships Leaving Birmingham

After a 13-year run in Birmingham's Legion Field, the Alabama High School Athletic Association is moving the state's Super Six high school football state championships. The AHSAA has voted to award the title games to Tuscaloosa and Auburn on a rotating basis, beginning with Tuscaloosa this fall.

The six-year deal calls for the Super Six to use Alabama's Bryant-Denny Stadium and Auburn's Jordan-Hare Stadium.

“I want to thank the City of Tuscaloosa and the Tuscaloosa Sports Foundation, the Cities of Auburn and Opelika and the Auburn/Opelika Tourism Bureau, and the City of Birmingham and the Greater Birmingham Convention and Visitors Bureau as well as both the University of Alabama and Auburn University for their diligent efforts during this process,” said Moe Smith, President of the AHSAA Central Board in a news release on the AHSAA website. “I also want to thank Birmingham for its role in making the Super 6 and Final 48 events what they are today. As we move forward, we see this new arrangement with each city as one that will take our championships to new heights.”

Sweet Water Makes It Three Straight Alabama 1A Titles

Sweet Water got the three-peat on Friday beating Speake 42-0 for the Alabama 1A high school football championship. Sweet Water running back Johnny Lockett was the game MVP with 171 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Sweet Water has now won 40 of its last 41 games. Click here for game summary.

UMS-Wright Makes History in Alabama Class 4A

UMS-Wright became the first Alabama school to win four Class 4A titles Thursday with a 41-7 win over Cherokee County. After winning Super Six crowns in 2001, 2002, 2005, the Bulldogs spent two years in 5A before returning to 4A this season. Click here for game story.

After a year of turmoil, Hoover is back in familiar territory. Friday night the Bucs beat Mountain Brook 30-20 to advance to the Alabama 6A semifinals. This one was never in doubt as Hoover built a 30-7 first half lead on the Spartans, who last week beat nationally-ranked Tuscaloosa County. Next week the Bucs (12-1) will play Huntsville (10-3). It was deja vu all over again for nationally-ranked Tuscaloosa County (#25 USA Today Super 25) as it lost for the second straight year to Mountain Brook in the second round of the Alabama Class 6A high school football playoffs. Mountain Brook, which won by three points last year, won Friday night's game 29-14. Next week the Spartans will try to avenge its only loss of the season when it faces Hoover in the quarterfinals.
