On the inaugural High School Football America radio show, I spoke with head coach Brad Igou about the school's sixith season of football. Barrow is the only 11-man football team playing about the Arctic Circle.

First High School Football Championship Hopefuls Reach State Championships

A week from today, America will have its first 2010 high school football champs.

Friday night, Service and Soldotna advanced to Alaska's Big Schools and Small Schools' championship games next Saturday in Anchorage.





Service's opponent will be determined today when Anchorage West plays Juneau-Douglas in the Big Schools semis. Soldotna will face the winner of today's Small Schools semifinal between defending state champ Kenai and Homer.

Alaska Crowns 2009 High School Football Championships

Kenai and Soldotna wrote another chapter in their rivalry Saturday.

Three weeks after being blown out by three-time defending champion Soldotna 52-27 in the regular season finale, Kenai (10-1) bounced back and beat the Stars 21-10 on Saturday to claim the 2009 Alaska Small Schools high school football championship.

The title is the fifth for Kenai during this decade. The Kardinals won four straight championships before Soldotna (8-3) began its run of three straight in 2006. According to the Anchorage Daily News, Soldotna hadn't lost to a small schools opponent since the 2005 season.

That opponent? Kenai, of course.

In the Large Schools championship, Bartlett's defense keyed the Golden Bears 21-3 win against Chugiak. The Anchorage Daily News reports that Bartlett forced five turnovers.

First High School Football Championship Trophies to be Handed-Out Today

Alaska was the first to start, so it stands to reason that it's first to end the 2009 high football season.

Today at Anchorage Football Stadium, three-time state champ Soldotna will play Kenai for the Small Schools championship. Once that hardware is handed out, Bartlett and Chugiak will battle for the Large Schools Championship.

The Small Schools title tilt has a lot of glitz to it since Soldotna and Kenai have won the last seven Alaska Small Schools championships. According to the Anchorage Daily News, a win by the Stars would match Kenai's streak of four straight between 2002 and 2005.

No one expected Bartlett and Chugiak to be playing for the First National Bowl Large Schools championship trophy. Bartlett finished third in the Cook Inlet Conference, while Chugiak finished fourth in the CIC.

Perfection Denied...Twice...In Quarterfinal Round of Alaska High School Football Playoffs

Two perfect seasons came to crashing halts Saturday in the opening round of the Alaska high school football playoffs.

In the Large Schools quarterfinal round, top-ranked and unbeaten Anchorage West was manhandled by North Pole 36-12. Ironically, it was North Pole that began the season as the #1 team in the big school classification. The Anchorage Daily News reports that the Patriots blew this one open in a three-minute span of the third quarter with three touchdowns.

On the Small Schools side of the equation, The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner details the end of Eielson's season. The second-seeded Ravens lost their first game of the season 24-14 to Kodiak. The Bears entered the postseason with a 4-4 record.

The Anchorage Daily News recaps the four Small Schools quarterfinal games, as all four Northern Lights Conference teams advanced to the semifinals.

High School Football Playoffs Underway in Alaska

It made me smile today when I read the first line of the Bartlett Flies Past Colony in the Anchorage Daily News that said there was snow in the mountains as the first round of the Alaska high school football playoffs began Friday.

Ever since I was a little kid, I've thought there's something romantic about football and snow.

Friday night, Bartlett and Palmer moved on to the Large Schools semifinals next week.

The Service Cougars won't be back to defend their Alaska Big School high school football championship when the playoffs begin in two weeks. Chugiak knocked-off the defending champs 21-20 on Thursday night, ending the Cougars hopes of picking-up the big trophy and putting the Mustangs into the playoffs. According to the Anchorage Daily News, the Mustangs earned their playoff berth by blocking a game-winning Service field goal attempt.

Top-ranked Anchorage West received a scare from Dimond Wednesday night, but according to the Anchorage Daily News a fake punt kicked the Eagles into high gear and a 33-9 victory. Because of the Jewish holiday Rosh Hashana, which begins at sundown on Friday, the Cook Inlet Conference has changed this week's schedule, which included two games on Wednesday.

In the topsy-turvy world of Alaska Big Schools high school football, Anchorage West made its claim to be the state's #1 team with its 20-16 defeat of defending state champ and former #1 Service. When the new Alaska Sports Broadcasting Poll comes out next week, the Eagles (5-0) should find themselves as the fifth #1 team this season. While most of America is kicking-off the 2009 high school football season, the state of Alaska reached the half-way point last night. Colony continues to show that it's deserving of the #1 Big Schools ranking. Colony beat three-time Small Schools champ Soldotna 24-17 to move to 4-0 on the season. The Anchorage Daily News reports that the win avenged last year's 40-16 loss to the Stars.

In Small Schools, top-ranked Kenai smashed Seward 69-0. For the season, the Cards have outscored their opponents 228-0

Thanks to a rapidly developing sophomore quarterback, defending Big Schools champ Service (3-0) is looking like a return to the championship game could be in the cards. J.J. Service's 49-3 Saturday night win over Dimond may have been just as exciting as the Cougars Big Schools championship last season. That's because the Anchorage Daily News reports that assistant coach Fenumiai "Numi" Italio, Jr. was back roaming the sidelines after returning from his tour of duty in Afghanistan with the Alaska Army National Guard.

This is a great story about a coach that has touched a team and a community.

Soldotna's 29-Game Win Streak Comes to an End on Opening Weekend of Football in Alaska

When it comes to the longest win streaks in Alaska football history, the Anchorage West Eagles has had something to say about them.

On Saturday, West beat Soldotna 34-21 to snap the three-time defending Small Schools champ's 29-game win streak. The loss leaves the Stars tied with Anchorage East for the long win streak in state football history. Back in 1988, it was West that ended East's 29-game streak.

The opening week of action also saw the #1 pre-season Big Schools team lose. North Pole lost to Colony 17-7.

Soldotna Wins Third Straight Alaska Small Schools Championship

The third time wasn't the charm for Kodiak, but it was for Soldotna as for the third straight year they met for Alaska's Small Schools state championship. Soldotna won its third straight title with a 28-6 win, which also tied the Alaska record for consecutive wins at 29 straight.
