26,614 Fans Watch St. Xavier Beat Trinity in Kentucky Showdown

If defending Kentucky 6-A champ Trinity has any solace from Saturday night's 32-7 whipping by arch-rival St. Xavier, it's in the fact that the Shamrocks had the same thing happen last year in the regular season before hoisting the most important trophy at the end of the year. Last year St. X demolished Trinity 30-6 in the regular season.

In fact, even though St. X has won five of the last six regular season games, it's been Trinity that has turned it around and won the four playoffs match-ups between the two since 2003.

According to the Courier-Journal, this wasn't really a perfect game for either of Kentucky top 6-A schools. St. X is now 5-1 this year, which Trinity suffers it's first loss to a Kentucky school and is 2-4.

Kentucky High School Football Coach Found Not Guilty in Player's Death

After a nearly two week trial, it took a Kentucky jury only 90-minutes to find former Pleasure Ridge Park high school football coach Jason Stinson not guilty of all charges in the heat related death of Max Gilpin in August, 2008. The Louisville Courier-Journal has the details of the decision.

According to the Louisville Courier-Journal, the case of former Pleasure Ridge Park head football coach Jason Stinson, charged with reckless homicide and wanton endangerment in the heat-related death of Max Gilpin, could go to the jury later Thursday for deliberations. Kentucky High School Football Player Dies

It never is easy to write these stories, but it's important to keep focus on the seriousness of what can happen on football fields.

Ft. Campbell (KY) high school player Tim Williams passed away after practice on Wednesday. A report on WKRN says that Williams died after practice and doesn't appear to be heat related since temperatures were in the 70's with rain. Click here to read the story.

My condolences go out to Williams' family, teammates and his school.

Non-Contact Drills Begin in Kentucky

Full contact drills don't begin until August 1st, but coaches in Kentucky are able to get down to the business of coaching today in the Bluegrass State. However, not all teams will be on the practice field today for non-contact workouts.

State officials want to make sure that before heading out into the summer heat, all coaches have completed training to comply with the state's new rules on heat-related training that were implemented last year after the heat-related death of Max Gilpin of Pleasure Ridge Park.

Two week's ago, the National Athletic Trainers' Association recommended that high school football teams should eliminate two-a-day practices in the first week of August. Kentucky High School Athletic Association rules prohibit teams from holding two-a-day workouts on consecutive days.

Beechwood Wins Another Kentucky High School Football Championship

John Hardin will get a shot at redemption next week when it faces Doss in the Kentucky 5-A high school football quarterfinals. The Bulldogs' (11-1) only loss this season was back on October 24th at the hands of Doss (10-2). John Hardin advanced to the Region 2 championship by beating Oldham County 43-23 on Friday. With lots of firepower at the top of Kentucky 6A classification, Boone County is hoping that it can just keep improving and get a shot at either St. Xavier or Trinity in the post-season. Friday night Boone County, ranked #3 in the lastest Associated Press Class 6A rankings, beat Ryle 28-14 to clinch a top-seed for the playoffs. It was a big night for junior running back Charles Quainoo, who carried 53 times for 306 yards. The Kentucky record for carries in a game is 57 set by Jeremy Britt of Warren East back in 1997. #21 Trinity (KY) Beaten By Crosstown Rival St. Xavier

The High School Football Huddle

A record-crowd of 38,872 watched St. Xavier (Louisville, KY) dismantle defending 6-A champ and nationally-ranked Trinity 30-6 Friday night. Even though USA Today had Trinity ranked #21 this past week, St. X entered the game as the #1 6-A team in the state.

Before Trinity fans get to feeling too upset at the loss, the last two times that St. Xavier won the regular season match-up (2005 and 2007), the Shamrocks rebounded and beat their arch-rivals in the state championship game. This year, the two won't be able to meet in the state title game, but could face-off in the state semis.
