The Ginn Way in Cleveland

Ted Ginn, Sr. is a man that is know for doing great things on the football field as the head football coach at Cleveland's Glenville High School.

Ginn's son, Ted Jr., plays for the Miami Dolphins and he coached Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith in high school. Last season, the Tarblooders played in their first-ever Ohio state championship game, losing to Hilliard Davidson 16-15 in the Division I title game.

Today, I found a great story that CBS News ran on Ginn in December. Ginn is helping at-risk youth in the city at his brand new school called the Ginn Academy. While Ginn has a lot of victories since taking over at at Glenville in 1997, his biggest wins may be coming in the classrooms with the children at Ginn Academy.

While #1 St. Thomas Aquinas was proving its might against #2 Byrnes in Florida, #25 St. Xavier was making a case that it deserves to be in the Top 10 in the country...and I believe the Bombers should be after a solid 17-7 win over crosstown rival Elder, which entered the game ranked #3 by USA Today.

Now with wins over Elder and Colerain, plus Indiana state champ Indianapolis Cathedral and Kentucky champ Trinity, St. X deserves a high national ranking, because it plays THE TOUGHEST schedule in the land.

Nationally-ranked Elder and St. Xavier carried the Ohio high school banner high and proud for the Buckeye State last night against two of the best teams in Kentucky.

In the battle of St. X's, the Bombers from Cincinnati beat Louisville's St. X 24-7. According to Cincinnati.com, The Tigers, who averaged 42 points a game in their first two wins, were held to 180 total yards.

At Elder's Pit, Panther head coach Doug Ramsey became the school's winningest coach when his squad beat Louisville Trinity 26-7. The victory was Ramsey's 112th to move him past Water "Babe" Bartlett. The Enquirer reports that kicker Tony Milliano kicked a school record four field goals.

Elder Wins Battle of Cincinnati With Solid Win over Colerain

Cincinnati high school football powers Elder and Colerain both started the season ranked in USA Today's Super 25....Elder at #4, Colerain at #13. When the new rankings come-out on Tuesday, the Panthers should hold steady in the fourth slot after a solid 20-7 win against its crosstown rival on Sunday in a game that was telecast on ESPN. As for Colerain, it's time to re-group after an 0-2 start for the first time since 1985. The Cincinnati Enquirer has the game wrap-up.

Saturday, the Bombers beat Indianapolis Cathedral, the #1 Class 4A team in Indiana, 19-10 as part of the quadruple-header known as the Horseshoe Classic at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indy. St. X is now 2-0 with wins over two top-ranked teams (Colerain in Week 1). Cathedral entered Saturday's game having beaten #1 5A teams Carmel and Warren Central on back-to-back weekends to start the season.

Defending Division I champ St. Ignatius picked-up where it left off Saturday night with a 14-13 win over Cleveland-area arch-rival Glenville. The Cleveland Plain Dealer's Bob Fortuna has a game wrap. St. Ignatius' win streak is now at 15. The Wildcats last loss was in the 2008 season-opener to Glenville.

Earlier in the week, one published report noted that St. Xavier head coach Steve Specht was excited to be flying under the radar coming into the 2009 season. After Friday night's 16-0 shutout of crosstown rival and nationally-ranked Colerain, the Bombers are back on the radar. Check-out the Enquirer wrap-up story.

St. X will get another big test next week when it takes on Indianapolis Cathedral. Cathedral is off to a 2-0 start beating the Carmel and Warren Central...both teams were ranked #1 in 5A. Cathedral is the top team in 4A.

America's Toughest High School Football Schedule? St. Xavier of Cincinnati

No one can ever accuse St. Xavier of Cincinnati, Ohio of playing a cupcake schedule. Once again this year, the Bombers will play what is arguably the toughest schedule in the country.

It all gets started August 28th when St. X plays cross-town rival Colerain. After that and on consecutive weekends, the Bombers play defending Indiana 4A champ Indianapolis Cathedral (9/5), 2008 Kentucky 6A semifinalist St. Xavier (9/11), defending Kentucky 6A champ Trinity (9/18), 2008 Kentucky 5A champ Highlands (9/25) and finally Elder, which is ranked #13 in the PrepNation.com pre-season rankings.

Just for good measure, the Bombers will face defending Ohio Division I champ St. Ignatius on October 24.

Now for the good news, quarterback Luke Massa is back for his senior season after a disappointing junior year that ended with a broken collarbone in the middle of last season. As a sophomore Massa led St. X to the Division I title.

So with last year's disappointing 4-6 record behind them, the Cincinnati Enquirer looks at what is ahead as St. X attempts to regain its form and challenge Elder for the Greater Catholic League South title.

I Bet You Didn't Know This!

On the surface, the story that Portsmouth High is getting a new football stadium this year, wasn't a big deal. I was just going to post it on the Ohio High School Football Huddle.

Then I did a little research, and I found a story that I thought Huddle readers would also like.

Portsmouth is a proud football town in southern Ohio. On September 5th, the brand new $10 million Clark Athletic Complex will be christened when the Trojans host Portsmouth West. However, the stadium that is being left behind, is what I find the most interesting part of the story.

For years the Portsmouth Spartans played at historic Spartan Stadium that was built in 1930. It was the home field of the NFL's Portsmouth Trojans from 1930-33. The original name of the field was Universal Stadium.

While Green Bay is the last small town standing in the NFL, Portsmouth in the 30's had that professional football feel until the team was sold and was moved to Detroit in 1934 to become the Lions. In fact, in my research I found an interesting tie between Portsmouth and the Packers.

On December 4, 1933, the Spartans beat the world champion Packers 19-0 in what is considered the most famous game at Universal Stadium. What made it great was the fact that Portsmouth only had only eleven players. The game became simply known at "The Iron Man Game".

When you spend a lot of time scouring the web for high school football news, you uncover a gem or two.

I liked this one today about the retirement of Neil & Jill Little from Maumee, Ohio, who announced they were retiring after nearly two decades of broadcasting local football and basketball games on the radio, public-access television and internet in the Toledo area.

Neither was formally trained in the biz, but looks like from the story in the Toledo Blade that the team known as "Mr. & Mrs. Friday Night" had a great following.

As one who loves the game of high school football, I give a big thumbs up to the Littles for taking the time to share their passion with others.

Would LeBron James Have Been The Best Receiver of All-Time?

There's nothing better than starting a Sunday morning with the New York Times sports section! Today's paper was particularly chock-full of interesting feature stories, including one that looks back at LeBron James' high school football career at St. Vincent-St. Mary in Akron, Ohio.

While King James didn't play football his senior season to protect the NBA riches that were ahead of him, he did have a very solid seasons. Click here to read Jonathan Abrams good story that includes a great pic of James as a high school wide receiver.

Ohio to Allow a Third Pre-Season Scrimmage

Starting this fall, Ohio High School Athletic Association football schools will be permitted to participate in three preseason contests instead of two. The third contest, known as a Jamboree, As in the past, may be held anytime between August 14 and August 22.

A Jamboree is a contest played in accordance with National Federation of State High School Associations playing rules for a game that can last between two quarters to a full game. The Jamboree will provide football teams with a "game-like" tune-up prior to the first official game and will give school athletic departments an additional revenue generating activity.

In addition, schools that sponsor a Jamboree will contribute a portion of the income to the OHSAA to help defray costs of providing catastrophe accident insurance coverage. OHSAA catastrophic accident insurance provides coverage for more than 300,000 Ohio interscholastic athletes in the event of a catastrophic injury (medical bills exceeding $25,000). The annual cost of the insurance is $700,000.

"I think the coaches are excited that they will be able to provide their players with another tune-up prior to their first game," Daniel B. Ross, OHSAA Commissioner. "By charging admission, it will also give our member schools another revenue source during these tough economic times.

"In addition, the revenues generated will assist in paying the annual insurance premium, which provides catastrophe accident coverage for member school students who are athletes, managers, trainers and cheerleaders within the entire interscholastic program," Ross added. "By approving the Jamboree, our Board of Directors believes this is a 'win-win' for everyone."
