Elder Wins Battle of Cincinnati With Solid Win over Colerain

Cincinnati high school football powers Elder and Colerain both started the season ranked in USA Today's Super 25....Elder at #4, Colerain at #13. When the new rankings come-out on Tuesday, the Panthers should hold steady in the fourth slot after a solid 20-7 win against its crosstown rival on Sunday in a game that was telecast on ESPN. As for Colerain, it's time to re-group after an 0-2 start for the first time since 1985. The Cincinnati Enquirer has the game wrap-up.

#20 Elder Squares-off With Colerain in Ohio Quarterfinal Showdown

Elder (#20 USA Today Super 25) will renew its post-season rivalry with Colerain for the first time since 2004 on Saturday when the two meet for the Division 1 Region 1 championship at University of Cincinnati Nippert Stadium. A crowd of around 20,000 is expected to watch as these to Cincinnati-area giants via for the right to move-on to the Ohio state semifinals.

From 2000-2004, the Cardinals and Panthers met six times, including five playoff appearances. Elder knocked the Cards out of the playoffs in 2001, 2002 and 2003. The Panthers went on to win state titles in '02 and '03. Colerain won the 2000 and 2004 playoff games, and won the state crown in '04.

#18 Glenville-St. Ignatius Round Two in Ohio

As is usually the case in the Cleveland and Cincinnati areas of Ohio high school football, it's hard to make it to the Division 1 state championship game because of the quality of teams in the state's two biggest cities.

That will be the case this year as four top-notch teams...Glenville (#18 USA Today Super 25), Elder (#19 USA Today), St. Ignatius and Colerain all worthy of taking home a Division 1 championship trophy. In the case of Glenville and St. Ignatius, the season will come to a close for one of the Cleveland-area schools tomorrow when they meet for the second time this season.

St. Ignatius began the season in the USA Today poll, but lost to Glenville 20-17. Since that loss, both teams have run the table.

#8 Colerain (OH) Tumbles in High Scoring Affair

#8 Colerain (Cincinnati, OH) saw its national championship and Greater Miami Conference win streak go up in smoke Friday night in a 42-39 loss to Middletown.

#10 Colerain (OH) Keeps Rolling

Colerain's regular season win streak hit 33 and it's Greater Miami Conference streak hit 59 straight Thursday night with a 42-27 win over Princeton in the conference opener for both teams in a game that broadcast on Fox Sports Net Ohio.

Cardinal junior quarterback Greg Tabar ran for four touchdowns and threw for another in the win.

USA Today's New Super 25 High School Football Rankings

If you've been following The Huddle during the last three weeks, you've been reading stories how Colerain (Cincinnati, OH) has gotten off to a great start.

Well, the Cardinals have been rewarded for its wins over two teams (St. Xavier, OH & Highlands, KY) that were ranked in the USA Today Super 25 pre-season poll. Colerain, which had to replace 18 starters from last year's team, enters the first regular season poll of the season at #10.

Otherwise, things were fairly settled in the newest poll, with the top nine holding steady. Aside from Colerain, there are three other new faces in the poll...Lakeland (FL) at #14, Hamilton at #22 and Plano at #24. Pre-season Super 25's on the the outside looking in right now are #10 Brentwood Academy (TN), #16 St. Ignatius (OH) and #25 Parkland (PA).

Pre-season #18 St. Xavier (OH), which lost its season opener to Colerain, falls to #25 after rebounding from that loss by beating two-time Alabama champ Prattville. The Bombers have a big test this weekend when it plays #4 Don Bosco Prep.

Colerain (OH) Takes Down Second Nationally Ranked Team

Cincinnati Colerain (3-0) may be the hottest team in the country after its third straight impressive win. Friday night the Cardinals took down Highlands (#23 USA Today Super 25), Kentucky's defending 5A champ 33-18.

In what is considered a rebuilding year because of the loss of 18-starters from last year's squad, Colerain has now beaten two nationally ranked teams (St. Xavier #18, Highlands) and western Pennsylvania power McKeesport.

Colerain Tops #18 St. Xavier in Battle of Cincinnati Powerhouses

Over 15,000 fans watched the Battle for Cincinnati Friday night at the University of Cincinnati's Nippert Stadium...at least round one!

Colerain ran out to a 13-0 lead on defending Division 1 state champ St. Xavier and held on for a 13-8 victory. St. Xavier entered the game ranked #1 in the Cincinnati Enquirer Division 1 Coaches' Poll and 18th in the nation according to USA Today. These two have also combined to win three of the last four Ohio Division 1 football titles.

Don't be surprised to see them play again come playoff time.

#9 Colerain Advances In Ohio Playoffs...Next Up #5 St. Xavier

All season long Ohio has been the darling of the USA Today Super 25 high school football poll. Entering this weekend and the 2nd round of the OHSAA high school football playoffs, the Buckeye State had three teams in the Top 10...#5 St. Xavier (Cincinnati), #8 Cardinal Mooney (Youngstown) and #9 Colerain (Cincinnati).

That won't change when Tuesday's poll is release, but it will the following week because Colerain and St. Xavier will collide in the state quarterfinals next week in a rematch of last year's regional final won by Colerain 24-7.

Both teams won Saturday...Colerain with a 27-7 win over Archbishop Moeller; St. Xavier shutout Centerville 31-0 in the Division I playoffs.

Colerain moved to 12-0 behind Joe Harrison, who rushed for 160 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries.
