Turkey and High School Football

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Lots of fog in Mystic, Connecticut, but warm…48 degrees!!

Energy levels are high as Trish and I get ready to travel about 25-miles to Norwich for the 148th meeting of Norwich Free Academy and New London. This IS America’s oldest high school football game!

While more schools have bigger Thanksgiving Day tradition, as we were informed last at the bar inside the Hilton hotel we’re staying at. NFA and NL only began playing on Turkey Day in 2000, but it’s hard to look past the fact that these two played the first high school football game on May 12, 1875.

The really point is…there’s nothing better than attending a Thanksgiving morning high school football game!

Yesterday’s pep rally and Powder Puff game at New London were awesome and we really can’t wait to get to the field around 9 to start sending pics and reports on Twitter, that can be checked-out at http://www.twitter.com/fishersports.

After the game, we’re heading to spend the weekend in Newport, Rhode Island and a turkey day dinner at the White Horse Tavern, which was built in 1652!

America’s oldest football game followed by dinner at America’s oldest tavern…talk about things we are thankful for!!

Have a great day everyone, let’s not forget to think of those who are homeless or without family today, plus those serving in the military .

New USA Today Super 25 Rankings

by Jeff Fisher
High School Football America

There are three new teams in this week's USA Today Super 25 thanks to post-season losses by former #8 St. Ignatius (OH) and #21 Rock Hill (SC), and #18 Booker T. Washington's loss on the last weekend of the regular season in Florida.

The biggest shock was the loss by St. Ignatius to Cleveland-area rival Glenville. The Tarblooders moved into the national rankings at #18 with a surprisingly easy 30-13 victory that snapped the Wildcats 25-game win streak and hopes of defending their 2008 Division I championship.

If you missed the highlights over the weekend at the Ohio High School Football Huddle, you can check a great video piece by the Cleveland Plain Dealer below.

The two other new Super 25 teams are Union (OK) at #24 and Grant (CA) at #25.

Paw Paw, Michigan Video Vignette Now Playing at High School Football America

by Jeff Fisher
High School Football America

After two months of travel and shooting video, High School Football America's first video vignette is up at www.highschoolfootballamerica.com.

This week's story is about the tiny southwest Michigan village of Paw Paw. With a population of just over 3,500 people, Paw Paw is just what we look for at High School Football America.

In the coming weeks, we'll have feature stories on Sheridan, Indiana; Burlington, Wisconsin; Miles, Iowa; Oak Park, Illinois; Pen Argyl, Pennsylvania and Norwich and New London, Connecticut.

The Scoreboard Says It All in Shattuck

by Jeff Fisher
High School Football America

The picture above was taken and sent to me by Ray Blakley, a Shattuck (OK) alum who was at Friday night's 40-14 win over Goodwell that set a new record for consecutive victories by an 8-Man high school football program.

After the victory, the Indians scoreboard was changed to 91-0 in honor of the school's 91st straight victory.
