Gotta Love The Nickname!!

Yes Valdosta (GA) is the winningest high school football program in the country, but that's not the reason for the post. It's because the Wildcats Friday night opener against Jordan High from Utah was washed out, and it gives me a chance to post a preview story from the Valdosta Daily Times.

But still that's not a big deal...right??

Actually, it's just because I love the nickname Jordan HS....it's The Beetdiggers!! How cool is that??

If you're interested in the game preview, please click on our headline "Gotta Love The Nickname".

And check out the logo!!

#8 Mater Dei (CA) One of the Best Because of Barkley

Mater Dei (Santa Ana, CA) was ranked #8 in the nation in the USA Today Pre-Season Top 25 High School Football Poll.

The reason? Junior quarterback Matt Barkley, who next week will begin his third season as a starter when Mater Dei faces West Covina.

For those of you, who don't know, Heisman Trophy winner Matt Leinart played at Mater Dei before moving on to his stellar career at USC. At 6-3, 228 pounds, the straight-A student is the envy of any top college football coach in the country.

To read more about Barkley from a story in the LA Times, please click on our headline "Mater Dei One of the Best Because of Barkley".

Independence (NC) Takes Its 109 Game Win Streak On The Road

For only the second time in its 109-game win streak Independence will venture outside of North Carolina looking for a win. The 7-time defending state champs will take-on Elder from Cincinnati Saturday night in the Ohio Vs. USA Challenge III. The only time that Independence has played outside of the Tar Heel State during its win streak was in 2003 when it won at Spartanburg, South Carolina.

For a preview of the game, please click on our headline, "Independence Takes Its 109 Game Win Streak On The Road".

Preview #4 St. Xavier (OH) vs. #5 DeMatha (MD)

Ohio versus USA Challenge III has eleven big games, but maybe none bigger than Sunday's showdown in Cincinnati where St. Xavier, ranked #4 by the USA Today, takes on DeMatha of Hyattsville, Maryland, ranked #5 by USA Today.

It will be a national stage for DeMatha head coach Bill McGregor, who since taking over the reigns of the program in 1982 is 239-32-3!!

To read more about McGregor and a preview of Sunday's game from The Enquirer, please click on our headline "Preview #4 St. Xavier vs. #5 DeMatha".

Kirk Herbstreit Ohio Vs. USA Challenge III

Year three of the Kirk Herbstreit Ohio versus USA Challenge should be the best ever with 11 games in two days in two cities, featuring the best Ohio has to offer against national powerhouses.

“Every year the teams get better, the matchups more attractive and the national rivalries more intense,” said
ESPN College Football Analyst Kirk Herbstreit. “There are numerous Division I players in this year’s event who are being recruited by and have verbally committed to such top schools as Ohio State, Michigan, UCLA, USC, Florida, and Notre Dame. It’s
these players, their teammates, the coaches, fans, competition, sense of community and pageantry that make high
school football a passion for me and make me proud to have my name on this event.”

Starting today, The High School Football Huddle is adding highlights to the site. Each game we will choose a game to feature on the site.

Check out our Game of the Week from Sunday at Soldier Field in Chicago where arch-rivals Mt. Carmel and Joliet Catholic battled to a heartstopping finish. Mt. Carmel won the close fought battle 21-20.

Veteran New Jersey High School Football Coach Dies

Manasquan football coach Vic Kubu has died after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Kubu, who won 263 games in his career, coached last season from the press box, but still led his team to a 12-0 record and the South Jersey Group II championship. Kubu was 65.

The High School Football Huddle sends out its condolences to Kubu's family and friends.

New Head Coach Same Result For #23 Colerain (OH)

Colerain High School opened the 2007 football season with a solid 19-7 win over a solid Huber Heights Wayne team as part of the Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown.

It was the debut for new head coach Tom Bolden, who took over for Kerry Coombs, who left at the end of last season to become the defensive backs coach at the University of Cincinnati. The Cards used a punishing ground game. Colerain rushed for 301 yards, while the D stifled HHW to only three yards on the ground.

Booker T. Washington (FL) Takes Down Summerville (SC) In Battle of Nationally Ranked Teams

One thing that ESPN should learn...yes high school football is great, but made-for-TV match-ups just don't usually pan out in this sport.

Take Saturday's yawner between Summerville (SC) and Booker T. Washington (Miami). Both teams should be very good this year and both have great tradition, but that didn't translate to the little screen yesterday as Booker T. crushed the Green Wave 36-3.

What the nationally TV audience did see was a Tornado offense that should wreak havoc throughout Florida this fall. BTW rolled-up 473 yards in offense, averaging 9.7 yards per play.

To read a complete game wrap from the Post and Courier in Charleston, please click on our headline " Booker T. Washington Takes Down Summerville in Battle of Nationally Ranked Teams".

#4 St. Xavier Rolls In Opener...But Star Tailback Hurt!

St. Xavier cruised to an easy 35-7 win over Winton Woods Saturday, but Bombers fans are holding their breath today.

That's because St. X's star tailback Darius Ashley twisted his ankle in the game after just two carries for 9 yards. Ashley was then held out the rest of the game.

St. Xavier, which is ranked #4 in the nation by USA Today and #1 by PrepNation.com, now begins it's preparation for next Sunday's showdown with national ranked DeMatha (Hyattsville, MD) with a big question mark....will Ashley be ready?

After the game Ashley was quoted as saying "I'd play iwth a broken leg in the state finals"...however next week isn' t the state finals!

For a complete game wrap from The Enquirer, please click on our headline "#4 St. Xavier Rolls in Opener...But Star Tailback Hurt!"

Independence (NC) 108 And Counting?

The Independence Patriots open their 2007 North Carolina high school football season tonight against Olympic. At the end of the night, the Pats' nation's best win streak should stand at 109 straight. Can the Charlotte team catch DeLaSalle's incredible win streak of 151-games? Well it will take almost three years before we know the answer.

In the meantime, Independence faces a lot of challenges as it goes after it's 8th straight North Carolina high school football championship. To read about those challenges, please click on The High School Football Huddle headline "Independence (NC) 108 and Counting".

Prepnation.com Pre-Season Top 25 Poll

If you've been with me since I started this blog, you know I think that national polls are nothing but a bunch of crap!!

However, I do know that they're also fun.

So with that in mind, here's PrepNation.com's Top 25, which says that St. Xavier from Cincinnati is the best the nation has to offer. If in fact, St. Xavier is THE team, they'll get quite a test in the 3rd Annual Kirk Herbstreit Challenge when they face PrepNation.com's #3 team DeMatha.

Then there's the ultimate made-for-TV match-up on September 15th when Southlake Carroll takes on Northwestern for the bragging rights between Texas and Florida high school football crazies!

Here are the rankings with last year's records

1. St. Xavier (Cincinnati, OH) (10-2)
2. Southlake Carroll (Southlake, TX) (16-0)

Saturday Football Scores from The Great White North

Dimond lost 27 seniors from last year's squad that finished sixth in the Cook Inlet Conference...the prognosis for 2007...not great. However, nobody told the Lynx they should be that good.

Dimond opened the 2007 season on Saturday with a 19-14 upset over Palmer, which entered the season ranked #3 in the pre-season Big Schools Poll.

Quarterback Nate Jaworski led the way in his first start completing 11-of-18 passes for 255 yards and two touchdowns.

Here's the rest of Saturday's scores with some key stats:

West Anchorage 44 West Valley 35
West scored 22 third quarter points.

Kenai 46 Houston 0
Kenai RB bill Chimphalee 269 yards rushing and three touchdowns.

Homer 36 Seward 0
Homer QB Corey Sutherland 3 TDs (2 passing, 1 rushing, 2-2pt. conversions). Homer RB Matt Tyrell 110 yards on 17 carries

Valdez 56 Delta 13

Jeff Criss-Crossing the Country

Hopefully everyone is enjoying the Dog Days of August. It's hot as hell in Chicago, and of course elsewhere. I've spent quite a bit of time on the road since June 27....and the one thing that makes it bearable is when I happen to drive by a high school football field I've never scene before!!

Yeah, I know that sounds corny, but seriously...when you're on the road, you need those little things to level you.

Remember a few weeks ago when I shared Laguna Beach High School...the most breathtaking few in high school football. After Cali I headed east.

One of my trips was to Rochester, New York to visit my brother and nephew on the banks of Lake Ontario.

The above pics are from the Gates/Chili Spartans High School football field. Now on the the surface, not a big deal until my brother informed me that the Chili part of the equation isn't pronounced like the thing I love to eat on a cold winter night!

It's Chi...like Chives and Li...like Lie. Yes Chi-Lie!! It's the little things that make the fabric of high school football and it's communities unique.

Heading out to Chili's to get...you guessed it...a hot bowl of Chi-Lie with extra cheese!

Super Bowls (H.S.) Coming to Gillette Stadium

Patriots owner Robert Kraft is bringing the Super Bowl to Gillette Stadium...the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association's Super Bowls that is.

The Patriots owner mad the announcement earlier this week that six of the seven eastern state championship game will be played in Foxboro through 2009. The seventh game will be played at Stonehill College in Easton. The Patriot will host the game rent-free and cover game costs.

"Since our family bought this team we've wanted to do everything we can to encourage all youth sports, but especially football," said Kraft at a news conference announcing the deal with the MIAA. "We wanted to have high school football at Gillette Stadium."

To read more about the move to an NFL facility from the Boston Globe, please click on our headline "Super Bowls (H.S.) Coming to Gillette Stadium".

Mississippi State Supreme Court Allows Daytime Practices

It's a sad fact of two-a-days. Every year, we hear of several high school football players, who die on the practice field.

Last week in Mississippi, Chancery Judge Mitchell Lundey stopped all school-sponored outdoor activities in his court district of DeSoto, Tate, Panola, Yalobusha, Greneda and Montgomery Counties after 17-year old junior linebacker Lonnie Magee of Mount Olive High School collapsed and died during a Wednesday practice.

Friday, the state Supreme Court threw out the judge's order.

National power South Panola fell under the Judge Lundey's original order and was able to use the University of Mississippi's indoor facilty, but not all teams are that lucky.

What should be done when it comes to heat related issues? Should team hold more practices late in the day? Give us your solutions...or weight-in with your thoughts.

If you'd like to read more on the case from the Clarion Ledger, please click on our headline "Mississippi State Supreme Court Allows Daytime Practices".

Opening Night

It's full speed ahead to the crowning of state champions are the country. Of course, we're going to have to wait at least three month for the crowning of our first high school football champs, and that will come in Alaska. So it stands to reason that if Great North is the first to crown, it's also the first to start and things kicked-off last night with five games and will continue Saturday with a full slate of games.

The biggest surprise of the night was that that defending Big Schools champ South Anchorage was beaten by Chugiak 10-7. Actually it wasn't that big of a shock considering the Chugiak was ranked #2 in the state in the pre-season polls. For a complete wrap-up of the game you can click on our headline "Opening Night" to read the game story from the Anchorage Daily News.

If you want a complete wrap-up of the night's five games, please click on the Alaska Huddle in our links section.

Here are the finals from all five games:

Chugiak 10 South 7
Soldatna 62 North Pole 42
Wasilla 41 Eagle River 6
Colony 47 Eielson 0
Skyview 54 Nikiski 6

Steriod Testing In Texas May Be Delayed

High School football practice began in the Lone Star State Monday, but the nation's first steriod testing program wasn't ready. In the spring, the state passed legislation mandating random steriod testing for high school athletes, but as of Monday, a contractor still isn't in place to run the $3-million dollar program. Right now the state is sifting through 14 contractors that submitted bids to run the nation's largest random steriods testing program. Officials say it will take a little bit of time to make a decision on the administrator of the program, but most believe that the testing will begin sometime during the season.

To read more on the story, please click on our headline, "Steriod Testing In Texas May Be Delayed".
