Jeannette's (PA) Terrelle Pryor Named USA Today's Offensive Player of the Year

USA Today has named Jeannette (PA) quarterback Terrelle Pryor as its Offensive Player of the Year.

Pryor, who is still undecided about where he'll play his college ball, was Pennsylvania's first quarterback to throw and run for 4,000 yards in his career. Pryor, who is also a basketball standout, is reportedly considering Ohio State, Florida, Michigan, Penn State and Oregon.

Pryor led Jeannette to Pennsylvania Class AA title.

The newspaper's Defensive Player of the Year is defensive back Patrick Johnson of Blanche Ely of Pompano Beach, Florida.

Coach of the Year honors went to Booker T. Washington's Tim Harris, who led his team to Florida's 4A championship and a #8 ranking in the final USA Today Super 25.

Nationally-Ranked Pittsburgh Central Catholic Takes on Parkland in Battle of Unbeatens

Today's Pennsylvania 4A high school football championship game will crown either Pittsburgh Central Catholic or Parkland as one of the top teams in the state during the first seven years of the new century.

Both teams enter the game unbeaten. PCC is ranked #11 by USA Today and will be appearing in its third state championship game since 2003. The Vikings lost to North Penn 37-10 in '03 and beat Neshaminy 49-14 to win the title in '04.

Parkland won the 2002 title, and is coached by Jim Morgans, who won two 3A titles while he was the head coach at Allentown Central Catholic in the 90's.

Osceola Running Back Ties Record But Falls Short of Title Goal

Osceola running back Kwamaine "Bubba" Brown scored two touchdowns to tie the state's single-season touchdown record of 44, but it wasn't enough as St. Thomas Aquinas beat the Kowboys 35-20 for Florida's 5A high school football championship.

Brown, who did set a new state scoring record with 278-points, finished the game with 172-yards. Osceola played the title game without its senior quarterback T'Sharvan Bell, who sat out with a knee injury. Earlier in the week, Bell verbally committed to Auburn.

St. Thomas Aquinas had finished runner-up to Lakeland in the last three 5A title games.

Steel-High Runs to Pennsylvania Class A Title

Steelton-Highspire junior running back Jeremiah Young showed Serra Catholic in Friday's Class A high school football championship game, why by the end of his career, he may be Pennsylvania's all-time leading rusher.

Young carried the ball an amazing 45-times for 292-yards and four touchdowns in Steel-High's 34-15 win. The 292-yards is a Class A championship game record.

For the season, Young gained 3,344 yards and scored 41-touchdowns. Young now has gained 6,235 yards in his career that will put him only 2,197 yards away from tying the state's all-time rushing record held by East Stroudsburg's James Mungro.

Osceola Trying To Bring Central Florida Pride 5A Title Game against St. Thomas Aquinas

In 2004 Osceola finished with a 3-6 record. In 2005, the Kowboys dropped to a dismal 2-8 mark. Friday night in the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Osceola will try to bring a state title to a central Florida school for the first time since 2001 when Apopka beat Northwestern for the big schools' title.

Osceola will have its handles full with powerful St. Thomas Aquinas, which has had back-to-back runner-up finishes in '05 and '06.

Naples Wins Florida's 3A Championship

Naples capped a perfect 15-0 season Friday with a 17-10 win over St. Augustine to win Florida 3A high school football championship.

The game came down to the fourth quarter and was decided on the play of both team's special teams. First, St. Augustine misfired on a punt in its own territory that resulted in a Naples safety and cut St. Augustine's lead to 10-9 with 9:03 to play in the game. Then, thanks to a 58-yard return by Antwain Harvey off St. Augustine's free kick, Naples was able to score the winning touchdown on a 34-yard run by junior running back Greg Pratt.

The title was the first for Naples since 2001.

Trip to State Final...Not So Far For Two Orlando Area Teams

Boone and Osceola won't have very far to travel for their Florida high school football championship games this weekend in Orlando. That's because both schools are from the Orlando area.

Boone will play Miami Northwestern, the nation's #1 team according to USA Today, for the 6A title, while Kissimmee Osceola plays St. Thomas Aquinas from Fort Lauderdale for the 5A championship.

St. Thomas Aquinas will be playing in its 11th state title game since 1991. The Raiders won state titles in 1992, 1997 and 1999 and have finished runner-up in the last three 5A title games to Lakeland.

Osceola running back Kwamaine "Bubba" Brown will have a chance to make state history. Brown needs three TDs Friday to break the state's single-season touchdown record of 42, which is currently held by Antone Smith (Pahokee) and Sean Taylor (Miami Gulliver Prep), the NFL safety who died from a gunshot wound November 26th during a robbery attempt at his home.

#6 Pahokee Wins Another Florida Title

Nationally-ranked Pahokee won its fourth Florida high school football championship in five years with a 53-14 win over Newberry in the 2B title game Saturday.

Quarterback Anthony Sheppard was nearly perfect. Sheppard completed 16 of his 21 passes for 384 yards and four touchdowns, that tied a state championship game record.

Top 100 All-Time Florida High School Football Greats

As Florida readies for its final two weeks of the state's 100th year of high school football, the Florida High School Athletic Association is celebrating with a look back at the greatest teams, players and coaches.

On Tuesday, the FHSAA revealed its top 100 players and the list reads like a who's who list with five NFL Hall of Famers topping the list. The Canton inductees on the FHSAA Top 100 Players are: Ted Hendrickson (Hialeah HS), Michael Irvin (St. Thomas Aquinas HS),Deacon Jones (Hungerford HS), Larry Little (Washington HS) and Jack Youngblood (Jefferson County HS).

The list was compiled from nominations submitted by media representatives from around the state. Final selections were made by a panel of high school sports experts, who spent more than 20 hours spread over 10 conference calls, and scores of emails, discussing and deliberating these and at least 100 other players who received serious consideration.

“There were no right or wrong choices in this process,” said FHSAA Associate Executive Director Jack Watford. “There were only opinions. Well-informed opinions, mind you, but opinions nonetheless. Get a dozen groups of high school football fans together around the state to pick such a list, and they’ll probably all come up with 25 or 30 common names. Beyond that, it’s anybody’s guess as to who they’ll come with. And the great thing about is, that absolutely none of them will be wrong.”

In the next week, the FHSAA will also announce the coaching staff of the All-Century team and Coach of the Century, the Teams of the Century and the All-Century team.
