Iowa and Wisconsin High School Football Playoffs Begin

by Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

I'm always amazed at how quickly Iowa, South Dakota and Wisconsin turnaround the end of the regular season and the first round of the playoffs.

South Dakota and Wisconsin, which ended their regular seasons last Thursday, played the first round of its postseason last night, while Iowa will play its substate round tonight after ending its regular season last Friday night.

To check-out last night's scores from the Badger State, go to the Wisconsin High School Football Huddle. For South Dakota scores go to the South Dakota High School Football Huddle. Go to the Iowa High School Football Huddle to check-out the first-round pairings.

Saturday High School Football Scores

by Jeff Fisher
High School Football America

Everyone expected Saturday night's battle of nationally-ranked Ohio high schools St. Xavier (#12 USA Today) and St. Ignatius (#22 USA Today) to be a defensive struggle because of St.X's rock-solid defense that was allowing just 7.5 points a game. According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, that was the case in the first half with the Bombers leading the defending Division I champs 7-6, but the second half was a different story.

In the end, it was St. Ignatius standing tall with a 30-21 victory was the 23rd straight for the Wildcats.

Weekend Update: High School Football Scores

by Jeff Fisher
High School Football America

Congratulations go out today to Shattuck High in Oklahoma which tied the national record for consecutive wins for an 8-man high school football team. The Indians beat Sharon-Mutual 46-32 Friday night for their 90th straight victory. Shattuck can set a new record with a win next Friday against Goodwell.

Meanwhile, the nation's longest active win streak for an 11-man team seems to back in high gear.

After a couple of close victories earlier this season, the Smith Center (KS) Redmen are rolling once again. Friday night, the Redmen beat Osborne 47-7 for their 74th straight win, which ties Maryville (TN) for the fourth longest straight of all-time. In the last two games, Smith Center has outscored its opponents 109-14.

To Quote James Earl Jones in Field of Dreams..."We're Going to Iowa"!

by Jeff Fisher
High School Football America

Dreary day in Chicago with plenty of rain that is causing the High School Football America team to try to determine whether or not we should take the trip 164 miles west of Chicago to Miles, Iowa to check-out my first-ever 8-man high school football game between Preston and East Central. The good news...the game will be played (barring lightning)...the bad news...we're going to get wet.

The reason we're going? Yesterday, I took a look at the six and eight-man games and decided a trip to the Hawkeye State was in order to check-out in-person.

Tale of the tape tonight...Miles has a population around 430, while Preston is a booming metropolis at 930!

Speaking of 8-man football, Shattuck (OK) High School is looking to make a little history today against Sharon-Mutual. If the Indians win, they will tie Morrison (OK) High's national record win streak of 90 straight.

Last week in Alaska, Bartlett and Kenai claimed the first championships of the year. The post-season gets underway in Indiana tonight and Utah has four play-in games. North Dakota began its 9-man playoffs on Tuesday.

So, going to pack the rain gear!!

Don't forget to check back with The Huddle later tonight for all the latest scores.

High School Football America Arrives

by Jeff Fisher
High School Football America

It's taken a little longer than expected but High School Football America's introduction video from Times Square in New York City is up and through today, tonight and the rest of the weekend, we will keep adding information. The web address is www.highschoolfootballamerica.com.

Since the end of August, Trish and I have been traveling throughout the midwest, plus a trip east to find the stories of high school football teams and their communities that other websites look past.

We've driven 1,122 miles and flown another 1,438 miles to bring you one-of-a-kind stories.

In the coming weeks, we'll introduce you to Sheridan, Indiana; Paw Paw, Michigan; Woodstock, IL; Burlington, WI; Pen Argyl and Jim Thorpe, PA, plus a village outside of Chicago that flipped on the lights after 100 years of playing home football games on Saturdays.

We're also looking for your input for stories. If you have one that we should cover, please email me at jeff@highschoolfootballamerica.com

In the coming weeks, we will also add bi-weekly podcasts and more.

Hope you enjoy and look forward to your feedback.

Finally...The High School Huddle will continue without missing a beat, as the place to check-out scores and news from around America.

Another Yogi Moment: Michigan High School Football Team Learns to Play All 48 Minutes

by Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

Last month we showed you video from a Vermont football game between Otter Valley and Mount Mansfield that proved Yogi Berra was right when he said, "it's not over, until it's over".

Now here's another example.

It comes from a game two weeks ago in Michigan between Canton Plymouth and Westland John Glenn.

The video on YouTube is described this way....

Quick lesson in high school football. The game isn't over until the official blows the whistle on the final play.

Canton (Michigan) Plymouth High learned that the hard way earlier this month.

The school thought it had defeated Westland (Michigan) John Glenn when it blocked a last-second field goal attempt. But when its players ran off the field in celebration, none of the players realized that the ball hadn't crossed the line of scrimmage and was still in play.

No official had blown the ball dead.

So while Plymouth celebrated, John Glenn's Tony Wilton alertly picked up the ball and ran 33-yards for the winning score.

It's a play, Wilton will never forget. Here's how it went down.

John Glenn trailed Plymouth, 28-27, with eight seconds left when it lined up for a potential game-winning field goal.

Wilton, a senior, is also the holder for field goals.

As the play unfolded, two onrushing Plymouth defenders dove and blocked the Ryan Lopez kick, which would never cross the line of scrimmage.

The Plymouth team erupted in jubilation of the last-second heroics.

Unfortunately for the Wildcats, the play was not over.

Wilton alertly scooped up the ball and took off running and 33 yards later he had scored his first career touchdown and won the game, 33-28.

"I heard somebody say 'run.'" Wilton told The Observer & Eccentric following the game. "There were (Glenn) guys in front of me and they (Plymouth) all ran off the field. They thought the game was over.''

Plymouth coach Mike Sawchuk was not at all satisfied with how the final play was officiated.

"They (the officials) blew the whistle and the clocked stopped - everybody stopped,'' he told the paper. "They wouldn't give me an explanation."

In addition, some feel the video shows that Wilton's knee was on the ground when he picked up the ball - and act that would end the play if true.

The Plymouth players shouldn't feel too badly about it. After all, in a sense, they were just copying the pros.

Remember Leon Lett's famous Thanksgiving Day gaffe that cost the Cowboys a win over the Dolphins.

Sawchuk wants no part of that - or being an Internet sensation. He just wants what he feels his team earned: A victory.

"It's something that's a protest in my eyes,'' he told the paper. "We won the game. We played our tails off and they (Glenn) should not be happy with the win.''

The "protest" is so strong that the team's official website has yet to record a final score of the game.

Wilton, however, has his moment and his own memory.

"I didn't hear any whistle and I thought nothing of it."

Update: High School Football Scores

by Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

Yes...NFL takes center stage today, but still hard at work updating scores from this past weekend.

Great day in Pen Argyl, Pennsylvania yesterday. Caught-up with some old colleagues and friends at the Green Knights' homecoming game against Northern Lehigh. Brought back plenty of memories as Pen Argyl is the site of my first-ever football game back in 1971 when the Green Knights and running back Woody Petchel, who graduated as PA's all-time touchdown leader, beat my alma mater Wilson.

Later this month, you'll be able to check-out all that is Pen Argyl football at High School Football America.

The High School Football Huddle

Getting closer to the dream!!

Perfect Friday night...long night of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band playing the last concert at Giants Stadium, and then worked on putting-up scores until early in the morning. Now getting ready to head out of New York City to Pen Argyl, Pennsylvania for a little Saturday afternoon football.

BTW...High School Football America has licensed seven Springsteen songs for the site.

Final video shoot before launching High School Football America on Monday. Probably going to play The Boss' Working on A Dream album on the 100-mile drive to the Slate Belt. It's called that because it's really the birthplace of slate. There's a good chance if you're old enough, your education began on a Slate Belt blackboard.

Weekend Update: High School Football Scores

by Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

It's been another record breaking weekend for The High School Football Huddle as far as page views!!

Thanks to everyone that has been checking-in.

Aside from the fantastic numbers, Trish and I are moving closer to launching High School Football America. We're still shooting vignettes from around the midwest. Friday night we were in Burlington, Wisconsin...home of Tony Romo of the Cowboys, The Liars Club and Nestle's.

High School Football America (www.highschoolfootballamerica.com) will be launching on October 12th and later today we'll have a preview of Friday's homecoming game in Burlington that brought out some great tailegating food.

In addition to Burlington, which is 65-miles from our home base of Chicago, we've also visited Sheridan, Indiana; Paw Paw, Michigan and Woodstock and Oak Park, Illinois.

Also, just because it's Sunday, it doesn't me it's a day of rest for us, I'll be updating scores and stories throughout the day. Click on the links below to get news and scores from your favorite states.
