Sportsmanship and Playing Like Warriors

by Jeff Fisher
High School Football America

I saw a first on Saturday...an 11-man football team playing with only 11 players.

Carson Long Military Institute suited-up only eleven players in Saturday's game against Pius X in New Bloomfield, Pennsylvania.  The Warriors didn't have much of a chance in their 66-24 loss to the Royals, who won their sixth straight game to improve to 6-3.  However, Carson Long did give the Royals a lesson in heart, while Pius showed the fans and their opponents the meaning of sportsmanship.

Carson Long's Warriors played like warriors by playing all 48-minutes both ways while NEVER giving-up!  Royals head coach Phil Stambaugh showed respect to his fellow head coach Pete Lasavage, who Stambaugh's family has known for over 20 years, by running a modified version of his high-powered passing offense, while openly rooting and cheering for Carson Long players, who put on one of the most valiant efforts I've every witnessed.

Even though Pius is one of the smallest teams in America playing 11-man football (63 boys in the small Catholic school in Roseto, Pennsylvania), it still suits-up 50 players.

Kudos to both coaches who showed class in every sense of the word, in the face of a very difficult situation!

There's a new national record for overtimes in a high school football game.

Early Saturday morning, Jacksonville beat Nacgodoches 84-81 in a twelve overtime game that eclipses the old national record of nine overtimes.

Saturday High School Football Scores - 10/23/10

by Jeff Fisher
High School Football America

It's a typical day in San Francisco...foggy and rainy, but the Giants win over the Phillies seems to have everything thinking the sun is shining.

Like every weekend, there are plenty of WOW-type stories to share.

The stop us if you can game was played in Cerritos, California where Valley Christian outlasted Maranatha 70-64 in five overtimes.  To check-out all of the offense, read the game summary from the Pasadena Star-News.  The national record for overtimes in a high school game is nine set back in 1977 in Michigan by Detroit Southeastern and Detroit Northeastern and then tied in 2006 when Bothell beat Pasco 43-40 in nine overtimes in a Washington 4A quarterfinal game.  The video from that game is below.

The Valley Christian-Maranatha game started at 7 and ended at 11:30...that's a two full games of football for the price of one. That's a good deal in today's economy!

Indiana high school football fans are still talking about their big first round playoff upset. The state's #1 Class 5A team and defending state champ Warren Central was beaten by Lawrence Central 35-14. The Indy Star reports that Lawrence Central (9-1) jumped-out to a 14-0 lead and never looked back in defeating the nationally-ranked Warriors.

Part 2 of High School Football America's Inside Game Day Released

by Jeff Fisher
High School Football America

The Pius X Royals (Roseto, PA) will be going after their fifth straight win today when they host Susquenita.

After an 0-3 start, first year head coach Phil Stambaugh has his young team...only seven seniors in position for a District 11 Class A playoff berth.

Throughout the season, High School  Football America has been chronicling the progress of the team, which is one of the smallest in the country playing 11-man football.

Yesterday, I released Part 2 of a three-part series that takes fans inside this small program where the coach does more than just call plays.  He's the janitor, the laundry guy...and the list goes on-and-on.  Part 2 takes you from the team prayer to just before kick-off.

High School Football America Goes Behind-the-Scenes of Game Day at Pius X

by Jeff Fisher
High School Football America

Getting ready to head to some high school football in the Bay Area, and also to console Phillies fan, who may be contemplating jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge if the Giants current play continues in Game 5.

During the flight, I'll be editing the second part of a three-part video that gives my readers an inside look at the first game of Pius X head coach Phil Stambaugh's coaching career.

If you've been following throughout the season, you know that I've been given full access to the Pennsylvania Catholic school that is one of the smallest in the nation playing 11-man football. The Royals have 63 boys in the school...50 play football for the proud program.

With a very young team this year and the loss of one of its co-captains Zack Cinelli to a knee injury in the second scrimmage of camp, the Royals stumbled out of the gate to an 0-3 record. However, they've now put together four straight wins an have a shot at an All-American Conference championship, plus a berth in the District 11 Class A playoffs.

In Part 1 of my behind-the-scenes look at the Royals, I feature the Royals' September 4th game against Pottstown, which plays two classification higher than than Pius. This episode takes you from the beginning of the day at 7:30 a.m. at Amelio Scott Alumni Stadium in Roseto, Pennsylvania to the team getting ready to go out on to the field for its pre-game warm-ups.

Win Streaks & the New USA Today Super 25 Rankings

by Jeff Fisher
High School Football America

The 2010 season hasn’t been a good one for team’s riding long winning streaks.

Friday night, Reidsville (North Carolina) lost 28-7 to Cummings to stop the nation’s longest active win streak at 55.  Ironically, the streak began for Reidsville back in 2006 after a 39-21 loss to Cummings.

Reidsville became they third team in America this year to see its quest to match De La Salle’s (Concord, CA) record of 151 straight wins go up in smoke this season.

Plymouth (New Hampshire) began the season with the longest active streak at 55 straight, but after a 2-0 start, the Bobcats streak was snapped at 57 with a 20-9 loss to Kennett, which back in 2004 ended Plymouth’s then record 46-game win streak.

Lake Travis (Austin, TX) would have been next-in-line to take over the top spot, however, one week before Plymouth lost, the Cavaliers saw their 48-game win streak snapped in a 14-10 loss to Westlake.

Two 40+ game win streaks were snapped during the first weekend of September.

Solon (Iowa) had its 42-game win streak snapped September 3rd when it lost 21-15 to Regina (Iowa City, IA).   That same night, Cascia Hall (Tulsa, OK) was beaten 34-27 by Holland Hall, which snapped the Commandos’ 41-game win streak that was one short of Oklahoma’s all-time record of 42 set by Ada in the mid-90’s.

So the question is…who now has the bull’s eye on its chest?

According to our research, another North Carolina team has taken over the top spot.  West Rowan (Mt. Ulla, NC) won its 39th straight game last Friday night with a 40-0 shutout of Statesville.  Right behind at 37 is Phoebus High School (Newport News, VA).  Directly behind Phoebus are two teams riding 36-game wins streaks....Alcoa (Tennessee), which is going after a record 7th straight Tennessee state championship,  and Highlands High (Ft. Thomas, KY).

Shifting gears, but still speaking of streaks, Soldotna beat Kenai Saturday for its fourth Alaska Small Schools football championship in five years.  The Stars and Kardinals, which are separate by 10-miles, have now combined to win nine straight titles.

The 77-42 victory was the highest scoring game in Alaska high school football championship history, which was then followed by the lowest scoring game as Anchorage West beat Service 6-0 for the Big Schools title.

Friday night the High School Football America cameras were on the south side of Chicago Friday night to do a future story on THE streak in America.

It belongs to St. Rita alum Dr. Gerry Grieco, who has now attended 491 straight Mustang games!  Yes, Dr. Grieco, has not missed a game since 1968 when his beloved Mustangs were 0-9.

Finally, I turn your attention to the latest USA Today Super 25 rankings.  There are three Super 25 teams with a long active win streaks...Phoebus (36 straight), Hamilton (Chander, AZ) with a 33-game win streak and Cocoa (Florida) with 31 straight.

The only new team entering the poll this week is Mission Viejo (California) at #25 replacing former #20 Glades Central (Belle Glade, FL), which dropped out of the poll.

1. Euless Trinity (TX) 8-0, LW: #1
2. South Panola (MS) 8-0, LW: #2
3. Phoebus (VA) 7-0, LW: #3
4. Bingham (UT) 8-0, LW: #4
5. De La Salle (CA) 6-0, LW: #7
6. St. Thomas Aquinas (FL) 6-0, LW: #6
7. Hoover (AL) 8-0, LW: #9
8. Hamilton (AZ) 8-0, LW: #8
9. Manatee (FL) 6-0, LW: #5
10. Har-Ber (AK) 7-0, LW: #10
11. Glenville (OH) 8-0, LW: #11
12. Don Bosco Prep (NJ) 5-0, LW: #12
13. North Gwinnett (GA) 7-0, LW: #13
14. West Monroe (LA) 7-0, LW: #15
15. Dorman (SC) 8-0, LW: #16
16. Katy (TX) 7-0, LW: #17
17. Camden County (GA) 6-1, LW: #19
18. Wheaton Warrenville South (IL) 8-0, LW: #24
19. Grant (CA) 7-0, LW: #18
20. Cocoa (FL) 7-0, LW: #14
21. Warren Central (IN) LW: #21
22. Miami Central (FL) 5-1, LW: #22
23. Mullen (CO) 7-0, LW: #23
24. Jenks (OK) 7-0, LW: #25
25. Mission Viejo (CA) 7-0, LW: NR

Alaska Crowns Two High School Football Champs

by Jeff Fisher
High School Football America

Anchorage West and Soldotna captured Alaska's two high school football championships in opposite styles.

West won the Big Schools title with a 6-0 win over Service in the lowest scoring game in championship history.  Soldotna won the Small Schools trophy in the highest scoring game.

Soldotna beat Kenai 77-42 in a game that the Stars rushed for a record 641 yards.

Friday Night High School Football Scores - 10/15/10

by Jeff Fisher
High School Football America

I'm back from my trip to the south side of Chicago where I met a great St. Rita football fan-atic.

Dr. Gerry Grieco attended his 491st straight Mustang game tonight, and he walked away happy after his team improved to 8-0 with a 37-0 win over St. Ignatius.

This post is also historic for The High School Football Huddle, as it's our 2,000th post here.  Across the network of 52 blogs, I've posted close to 6,000 pieces of information over the last three years.

First State High School Football Championships to be Decided this Weekend in Alaska

by Jeff Fisher
High School Football America

Hard to believe, but it's only the middle of October and the high school football season is coming to a close in Alaska this weekend.

The Big Schools and Small Schools championship games will be played tomorrow at Anchorage Football Stadium.  At noon, undefeated Soldotna will face Kenai in the Small Schools title game; at 4:30 unbeaten Anchorage West will play Service for the Big Schools title.

The West (10-0) and Service (9-1) game will be interesting because West beat the Cougars in the season-opener 38-35, but only after trailing 22-7 in the 3rd quarter.

Meanwhile, either Soldotna (10-0) or Kenai (7-3) will carry home the hardware for the ninth straight time.  Kenai is the defending Small Schools champ and has won five titles in the last eight years.  Soldotna, which lost to Kenai in the championship game last year, has won three titles.

The Anchorage Daily News reports another fun part of the Kenai/Soldotna rivalry is the two schools are only 10-miles apart.

As for High School Football America's weekly journey...tonight we're staying in Chicago to get the story that we couldn't get to last week because of horrible traffic.  We're headed to undefeated St. Rita High School to talk with Mustangs' alum Dr. Gerry Grieco, who will be attending his 488th straight game for his alma mater.

After the game, I'll be here to update scores from around America...see you then!

Thursday Night High School Football Scores - 10/14/10

by Jeff Fisher
High School Football America

It's been a very exciting week for me.

On Monday I released our first High School Football America video vignette of the 2010 season on the Lowell, Michigan Pink Arrow Pride game that was played on September 10th. Shortly after the video went up, the hits started piling up, and then came some nice media write-ups on the seven-minute story.

NY Times writer Joe Drape, who last year wrote the great Our Boys book on the Smith Center, Kansas football team, mentioned the video in his NY Times' Quad Blog.

Joe Favorito, who involved with the Broadway play Lombardi, wrote a nice piece on his Sports Marketing & PR Roundup.

Thanks to the two Joes on their support of the Pink Arrow Pride project, which has raised over $300,000 in three years!

Now time to switch gears as the Thursday night scores are starting to come in. Just click on the state links below to see tonight's results.

Lowell Red Arrows Turn Pink to Raise Money in Fight Against Cancer

Jeff Fisher
High School Football America

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and that's why you see a lot of pink being worn at sporting events.

Last month, myself and High School Football America host Trish Hoffman traveled to Lowell, Michigan for the Red Arrows' annual Pink Arrow Pride game against Kenowa Hills.  The community of Lowell, which has a population of approximately 4,000, turned completely pink for the game that so far has raised $187,000 this year.

With players donning pink jersey, Lowell is a perfect 3-0 in the third Pink Arrow Pride games.  The Red/Pink Arrows have outscored their opponents 143-0.

This truly is an event that should go to the national stage.  More schools should join-in and have one day each season when a large number of teams put-on-the-pink to battle their opponents and cancer.

Saturday High School Football Scores - 10/9/10

by Jeff Fisher
High School Football America

The first score of the day comes from Roseto, Pennsylvania where the Pius X Royals reached the .500 mark with their third straight victory...a 57-0 win over Lourdes.

The Royals (3-3, 2-0 All-American Conference) only ran 27 offensive plays with junior running back Nick DeRea rushing for 111 yards and two touchdowns and freshman quarterback AJ Long completing all 13 passes he threw.  Long tossed for 187 yards and two touchdowns.

All-season long, High School Football America is documenting the progress of one of the smallest high school football teams in the country playing the 11-man game.  Pius has 63 boys enrolled in grades 9-12, but 50 of them play football for the tiny catholic school in northeast Pennsylvania.

High School Football America Checking-Out on of the Country's Longest Streaks

by Jeff Fisher
High School Football America

After seven weeks on the road, High School Football America returns to its home state of Illinois for tonight's game between St. Rita and Providence Catholic.

The game outside of Joliet will continue THE STREAK of Dr. Gerry Grieco, who will be attending his 487th straight St. Rita game.  Yes, Dr. Grieco definitely qualifies as the Mustangs #1 Fan.

Now switching gears to our season-long series on Pius X High School in Roseto, Pennsylvania.

The Royals will look to even its record at .500 with its third straight win tomorrow when it faces Our Lady of Lourdes.  This may be a game between two of the smallest schools playing 11-man football in America.

Pius has 88-boys enrolled in grades 9-12, Lourdes has 56.  However, there is a big difference in the roster size as the Royals have 50 boys playing varsity football.  Lourdes has 18.

My latest Pius X video is on how the team keeps in-shape during the season.  First-year head coach Phil Stambaugh puts the squad through circuit training twice a week.  Below is a video vignette that looks at one of those sessions.

Don't forget to come back to The High School Football Huddle tonight for all of your Friday night football scores.

High School Football America Checks Out 11th Winningest High School Football Program

by Jeff Fisher
High School Football America

As one famous girl with red shoes once said, "there's no place like home, there's no place like home".

That's definitely been the case over the last six weeks as I've reconnected with my hometown while shooting my season-long documentary on Roseto, Pennsylvania and its beloved Pius X High School football team.

Tomorrow I will be on-hand when the tiny town in the Slate Belt honors four individuals and the 1966 football team with induction into the Pius X High School Athletic Hall of Fame.  You can check that out Sunday at High School Football America.

In the meantime, I will be in historic Cottingham Stadium in Easton, Pennsylvania tonight to introduce my readers to one of my favorite stadiums.  Cottingham was built in the early 1920's out of sturdy concrete and has been home to the Red Rovers ever since.

Tonight, Easton, which is the 11th all-time winningest football program in America, will face Whitehall in a battle of unbeatens.  Whitehall is the program that produced former Penn State and NFL great Matt Millen.

Easton is former heavyweight boxing champ Larry Holmes' hometown, plus it's the third place where the Declaration of Independence was read to the public back in 1776.

See you later tonight when I will be posting scores from around the country.

Go out an enjoy at high school football game in your area...you WON'T be disappointed!
