North Chicago will not be playing its scheduled game with Vernon Hills tomorrow night. Today, the Illinois High School Athletic Association suspended all levels of the football program because of a fight that broke-out in last Friday's game against Simeon.

The game was called after just seven minutes and Simeon leading 21-0; Simeon was declared the winner.

According to a news release on the IHSA website, the North Chicago teams will be allowed to continue to practice, but will forfeit tomorrow night's Vernon Hills game. North Chicago administration officials will meet with the IHSA next week to discuss the remainder of the 2009 season.

“There is no place in high school athletics for the actions that occurred at the football contest between North Chicago and Simeon,” said Marty Hickman, Executive Director of the Illinois High School Athletic Association “Sportsmanship is at the forefront of the IHSA’s mission and this is a very serious incident that necessitated serious consequences.”

“Hopefully, this troubling incident will serve as a teachable moment for both of these schools, as well as all the other student-athletes, coaches and fans who enjoy high school athletics in Illinois,” added Hickman. “We can’t change what took place last week, but those who enjoy the privilege of participating in interscholastic activities must understand they are obligated to conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the ideals of good sportsmanship.”

Simeon will be allowed to continue its season, however, several players involved in the incident will be disciplined, according to the news release.

North Chicago is coached by former Chicago Bear Glen Kozlowski.
