The High School Football Huddle

The annual grudge match between St. Rita and Mount Carmel didn't turn-out to much of a Friday night as Mustangs, ranked #2 by the Chicago Tribune defeated the Caravan 54-18. According to the Trib, St. Rita was led by its 5-7 running back Jahwon Akui, who carried the ball 21 times for 204 yards and five touchdowns.

Nationally-ranked Maine South rolled to its 18th straight victory on Thursday with a 63-0 shutout of Maine West. According to the Chicago Tribune, Matt Perez, who's given a verbal commitment to Indiana, scored four touchdowns...one running, two receiving and one on a punt return. Quarterback Tyler Benz tossed four scores.

While Maine South and Mt. Carmel have garnered attention in national high school football polls, St. Rita is quietly getting ready for a state championship run. Friday night the Mustangs moved to 3-0 with a 35-14 win over Brother Rice. According to the Chicago Tribune, junior running back Jahwon Akui was at it again...scoring his 10th and 11th touchdowns of the season in the victory. The win was the 100th of head coach Todd Kuska's career.

However, Flyer fans don't fret, the 2008 season ended with 13 straight wins and an Illinois state football championship. Saturday Cincinnati Elder beat the Flyers, who entered the game ranked #10 by USA Today, 49-28. Elder is ranked #4 by USA Today. The Cincinnati Enquirer has the game story.

Maine South Runs Its Way to Illinois 8A Title

Coming into Illinois 8A championship game, Maine South quarterback Charlie Gordo was known for winning games with his strong right arm. However, it was the Vanderbilt-bound QB's legs that carried the Hawks (14-0) to a 41-21 win over Hinsdale Central (11-3). Gordo, who entered the game with over 3,000 yards passing and 37 touchdowns, carried the ball 25 times for an 8A title game record 164 yards and a touchdown. East St. Louis Captures First Illinois Title Since 1991

Illinois' winningest high school football team captured its 740th win and seventh state championship all in one game. East St. Louis beat Geneva 33-14 in the 7A championship game in Champaign. The victory capped a great season for the Flyers who lost their opening game in the Kirk Herbstreit Varsity Series and then reeled-off 13 straight victories. Click here for game story.

A team that won just three games over the previous two season captured the 5A Illinois high school football state championship on Saturday. Bloomington Central Catholic Knocks-off Unbeaten Aurora Christian For Illinois 4A Crown

Aurora Christian's dream season came to a close on Friday at the hands of another unbeaten team. Bloomington Central Catholic (14-0) beat AC (13-1) 37-28 to capture the state 4A title. The loss ended the great career of Aurora Christian quarterback Jordan Roberts who finishes as Illinois' passing yardage (9,752), passing attempts (1,129) and touchdown (127) leader.
