Friday Night High School Football Scoreboard - August 19th

The 2011 regular season in the Lower 48 began Friday night.

The biggest news last night came out of North Carolina where a couple of long win streaks came to an end.

The nation's longest active win streak ended when Mooresville beat West Rowan 21-14.  West Rowan, which had won 46 straight, jumped-out to a 14-0 lead, but Mooresville scored two touchdowns in a three minute span in the fourth quarter to pull-out the victory.

The longest active win streak now belongs to Phoebus (Hampton, VA).  The Phantoms have won 45 straight.

Back on July 21st, I spoke with West Rowan head coach Scott Young on the High School Football America radio show about the pressure of the streak and four-straight 3A state championships.  Click here to listen to that interview and the entire show.

Meanwhile, two-time defending state champ Butler saw its 31-game win streak end.

Mallard Creek beat the Bulldogs 28-20.  It was the first game new Butler head coach Brian Hales, who took over for Mike Newsome, who left the Bulldogs to take the head coaching job at A.J. Brown High School in Kannapolis (North Carolina).


Mallard Creek was led by quarterback Andrew Goodman threw for two touchdowns.

Getting closer to the dream!!

Perfect Friday night...long night of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band playing the last concert at Giants Stadium, and then worked on putting-up scores until early in the morning. Now getting ready to head out of New York City to Pen Argyl, Pennsylvania for a little Saturday afternoon football.

BTW...High School Football America has licensed seven Springsteen songs for the site.

Final video shoot before launching High School Football America on Monday. Probably going to play The Boss' Working on A Dream album on the 100-mile drive to the Slate Belt. It's called that because it's really the birthplace of slate. There's a good chance if you're old enough, your education began on a Slate Belt blackboard.

Pike improved to 3-1 Friday night by outscoring Lawrence Central 35-32. The key, according to the Indy Star, was the big play of a little man Cameron Crabtree, who rushed for more than 300-yards and three scores.

Carmel started the season in the top spot...and lost. Warren Central moved-in to the #1 spot after Week 1...and immediately lost. Center Grove took over at the start of this week. Friday night, Center Grove lost to pre-season #1 Carmel 17-14. Check-out the Indy Star's game story.

Indianapolis Cathedral is trying to take the mystery out of who the best team in Indiana is. For the second straight week, the Irish knocked-off the #1 team in 5A. Friday night, Cathedral beat Warren Central 35-32. According to the Indy Star, this one came down to end.

The Huddle Road Show Ready to Roll

The Huddle Road Show starts Friday as I head to Sheridan, Indiana to check-out a small town of less than 3,000 people with a big football tradition.

The 9-time state champ Blackhawks will be looking to rebound after a season opening 28-8 loss to Western Boone. Sheridan takes on Hamilton Heights tonight.

Two things that attracted us to the Sheridan story...head coach Bud Wright, who's the second on the state's all-time wins list in 44-years as the head Blackhawk and freshman quarterback Sam Zachary, who is a sixth generation signal caller at the school.

It was a battle of 5A and 4A #1's Friday night to open the high school football regular season in Indiana. When the smoke cleared it was 4A #1 and defending champ Indianapolis Cathedral that was feeling good about the rest of the season with 7-3 win over Carmel, the top team in 5A. The Indy Star has all of the details of the win that gives the Irish a 3-2 lead in the hard-fought series that was played last year before a national television audience courtesy of ESPN.

Center Grove Mounts Big Comeback to Win Indiana 5A Title

Center Grove won its first Indiana state title Saturday and made history along the way. The Trojans rallied from a 19-point deficit with a little less than nine minutes to go in the game on the way to a 36-33 win over defending state champ Carmel at Lucas Oil Stadium. Indianapolis Cathedral Wins 7th Indiana Title

For the second straight week, Indianapolis Cathedral took down an undefeated team. The reward...the school's 7th Indiana high school football championship. Cathedral (12-2) beat Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger 10-7 for the state's 4A title. Click here for a game story.

Heritage Christian Claims First Indiana High School Football Title

It's believed to be the fastest run to an Indiana high school football title. On Friday, Heritage Christian beat Cass 17-14 for the Class 2A title giving the Eagles a state title just seven years after starting the program. Cardinal Ritter Halts Sheridan's Run of Championships

Sheridan's string of three straight Indiana high school football championships came to an end Friday. Cardinal Ritter scored the game-winning touchdown with 40 seconds to go in the game to lift the Raiders to a 34-27 win in the Class A title game at Lucas Oil Stadium. The loss closes out a four year run for Sheridan, which saw the program go 56-4 with a 44-game win streak. Click here for game story.

While all the big boys in Indiana soak-up the "pub" in Indiana, tiny Class A school Sheridan just keeps chugging along. Friday night the Blackhawks beat Southern Wells 48-14 to advance to next week's title game where they will seek their fourth straight championship and 10th overall. Sheridan will face Cardinal Ritter Friday at Lucas Oil Stadium. Sheridan and Ritter faced each other in the 2006 title game, which was won by Sheridan.
