The High School Football Huddle

Brockton and BC High began the 2009 season the way the 2008 season ended...playing each other. Brockton beat BC 27-3 to open the 2009 season and avenge last season's Eastern Mass Division I Super Bowl victory by the Eagles. The Boston Herald reports that the Boxers broke this one open at the start of the second half with a kickoff return.

After Avoiding Forfeit, Mansfield Advances to Massachusetts Super Bowl

One day after beating the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association off-the-field for the right to play in the Eastern Mass Division 2 semifinals, Mansfield beat Bishop Feehan 22-6 to advance to Saturday's Super Bowl. Originally, Mansfield was forced to forfeit the game by MIAA for using an ineligible player earlier this season, but less than an hour before the game on Tuesday, the school won an injunction in Superior Court. Next week, the MIAA will another hearing on the matter that could still result in Mansfield having to forfeit its post-season wins. Click here for a Mansfield-Bishop Feehan game recap.

They say the second time is the charm and that's the case for BC High, which shocked three-time defending state champ Everett in the Eastern Mass Division 1 semifinals Tuesday night. The Eagles, who lost 26-0 to Everett during the regular season, moved-on to Saturday's Super Bowl with a 9-0 victory at Manning Field in Lynn. Massachusetts Post-Season Begins Tuesday

The craziness that is Massachusetts high school football playoff begins Tuesday night. The eastern Mass semis are set for tomorrow night and then the winners have to bounce back and play in the Super Bowls on Saturday.

In Division 1, the semifinals are rematches for '07 with BC High (9-1) taking-on two-time defending champ Everett (9-1). The winner of that gets the Brockton-Dartmouth winner. Top-ranked Dartmouth won last year's semifinal and then lost to Everett 36-28 in overtime in the Super Bowl.

Massachusetts High School Football Scoreboard - Thanksgiving Day Scores

America's oldest continuous Thanksgiving Day football game turned out the way most of them have recently as Boston Latin beat Boston English 36-0. It was Latin's 11th straight win in the series that it leads 73-36-13 after its 122nd consecutive game on Turkey Day. Click here for game story for the Boston Herald.



Massachusetts' longest active win streak is over. East Longmeadow beat arch-rival Longmeadow 16-13 to snap the Lancers 47-game win streak. The last Lancer loss also came at the hands of East back on Thanksgiving 2004. Click here for a game story for MassLive.com.

Turkey Day Football in the Land of the Pilgrims

Since I spent the last two days talking about Thanksgiving high school football tradition in eastern Pennsylvania, I now want to let everyone in on a little secret. Massachusetts may have every state beat hands down!

Why? Hey, the Pilgrims invented the day!

So with that in mind, he are some fun facts about Turkey Day football in the Bay State.

Boston Latin and Boston English are meeting for the 122nd time, which makes it the oldest continuous high school match-up in the country. It's been a lopsided series with Latin bringing a ten game win streak into the game and it's won 42 of the last 44. Boston Latin leads the all-time series 72-36-13.

The oldest rivalry between public schools belongs to Wellesley and Needham, who are meeting for 121st time today. Wellesley leads the series 58-53-9.

Right behind is Barnstable and Falmouth. They're hooking up for the 119th game and it's the oldest game on Cape Code. It's a close series with Barnstable leading 56-54-8.

Lexington Grandfather Ready to Coach 50th Turkey Day Game

There's plenty of high school football to be served-up Thursday, and one of the most fascinating stories I came across this week comes out of the Boston area where 84-year Joe Tighe will coach his 50th...yes 50th...Thanksgiving Day game when Lexington plays Burlington. The 84-year old Tighe is the third winningest coach in Massachusetts high school football history with 256 victories. His overall record at three schools is 256-212-13.

Nantucket's Vito Capizzo enters the 2008 season just 23 wins behind former Brockton head football coach Armond Colombo (316-100-5) for the title of Massachusetts winningest football coach. Capizzo and his Whalers enters this season with a record of 293-129-8 and nine trips to the Super Bowl. Not back for a school that only has 359 boys and girls.

Everett Wins Back-to-Back Massachusetts Division 1 Super Bowls

It was a lot harder than everyone thought, but once again Everett is sitting atop Division 1 in eastern Massachusetts. The defending champs beat Dartmouth 36-28 in overtime Saturday night at Gillette Stadium.

Eastern Mass Division 4 Super Bowl Title Goes to Brighton

Last year West Bridgewater captured the eastern Massachusetts Division 4 Super Bowl beating Brighton 34-14. On Saturday, Brighton turned the tables and walked off the field unbeaten and the champs after a 16-8 victory at Stonehill College.
