MaxPreps honors California's St. John Bosco as #1 in the nation
by Jeff Fisher
Follow @HSFBamerica
There is no shortage of national ranking folks out there these days. Even I decided to dip my toe into the pool a couple of years ago with a High School Football America Top 25.
In my mind though, MaxPreps has done the best job through the years with two different types of polls - one an opinion poll, the Xcellent 25, headed by my good friend Steve Spiewak and the Freeman Rankings that use a non-biased computer program to determine team rank.
This past season, St. John Bosco came out on-top in the Freeman Rankings and this past Monday, representatives of MaxPreps traveled to Bellflower to honor the Braves and head coach Jason Negro as part of the website's Tour of Champions journey around America.

Final 2013 High School Football America Top 25

It's official - the Allen Eagles not only won their second straight Texas 5A Division I title yesterday with an easy victory over Pearland, but today it can lay claim to our mythical national championship. The Eagles ran the table to finish the season where they began it - atop our Power Rankings.
It's the second straight year that Allen finished at the top of our poll. Last year, the Eagles shared the crown with John Curtis (Louisiana).
This year it looked liked the crown would be split again with Allen, #2 St. John Bosco (California) and #3 Booker T. Washington finishing within a whisker of each other in our rankings that are based on a formula - not on opinion. There are 12 factors that go into our rankings.
How close were the top three teams? Check-out the table below that looks at several of our formula factors:
1. (1) Allen (Texas)
Overall Record: 16-0
8. (11) Northwestern (South Carolina)
9. (6) De La Salle (California)
11. (9) St. Joseph Regional (New Jersey)
15. (17) Mallard Creek (North Carolina)

So the 2012 high school football season is officially over - other than for some national and local all-star games for seniors.
What a season it was!
If you've been following our rankings throughout the year, you know that we didn't release our first Top 25 until a month into the season, in order to get an accurate picture of who was good on the field, not just on paper. We also didn't post rankings from mid-November on, so that the playoffs could unfold.
Now it’s time for High School Football America to name its first national champ.
Let’s also start using the word “mythical” in-front of national champs, because ultimately, there’s really no way to do this scientifically.
There are some years when a team rises head-and-shoulders above the pack, but for the most part, each year there could be anywhere from 5-8 teams that could lay claim to the “mythical” title. That’s the case this year with several teams having outstanding seasons.
We salute all of them! However, we need to name a national champ.
The choice could have gone many ways, but in the end, it came down to the Allen Eagles (Texas) and John Curtis (Louisiana) with Bellevue (Washington), De La Salle (California) and Katy (Texas) getting first-place votes.
My personal vote came-down to strength of schedule for the Eagles, who captured Texas’ Class 5A Division I championship Saturday night defeating previously unbeaten Lamar. The Eagles (15-1) finish the season with one loss, a 27-24 loss to Coppell (11-1) in overtime. Seven of Allen’s 16 opponents won 11 or more games this season.
There is no doubt that a case could be made for John Curtis. However, when you consider that Curtis (14-0) played seven opponents with sub-.500 records, compared with only three for Allen. On the other side of the equation, Curtis faced and passed everyone of its tests.
You can't do more than play your schedule and play it well. The Patriots' outscored opponents 667-60 with seven shutouts.
When the votes were tallied, we have co-national champs.
How would an Allen vs. John Curtis match-up turn-out next week? We'll never know...but we do know they are both great teams.
For those of you that would like to check out our first national rankings back in mid-September, click here.
Again, congats the everyone and I can't wait until 2013.
Happy Holidays!

Three of our teams suffered surprising losses over the weekend, which has shuffled the deck in the lastest High School Football America Top 25.
Falling-out are Camden County (Georgia), St. Edward (Ohio) and St. Joseph's Prep (Pennsylvania). All three suffered their first loses of the season over the weekend.
New this week, Bentonville (Arkansas), St. John Bosco (California) and Allen (Texas).
Bosco is interesting because they have four losses, but all four are forfeits from using an ineligible player earlier this year. The Braves are undefeated on the field and won the extremely tough Trinity League title.
Allen is back-in after climbing as high as #11 before losing to current #20 Coppell.

High School Football America National Top 25
By
Jeff Fisher
High School Football America
As promised, we took a month’s worth of games before
deciding on our very first High School Football America Top 25.
Quite, honestly, we were trying to stay away from doing
a national poll, but our readers kept asking for it, so we decided what the
heck, let’s give it a whirl and see how it turns-out.
For those of you that follow me on our national radio
show, you know I think that polls are all about creating conversation, not
actually crowning a “mythical national champion.”
Taking the mantle in our first poll is Santa
Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA). The Eagles are the defending CIF Division I champion, with a
ton of talent back from the 2011 squad, including Nebraska-recruit Johnny Stanton at quarterback. After a less-than-impressive couple of wins
to start the season, the Eagles have turned it on with back-to-back 55-0 and
72-0 shutout victories.
We’ll find-out how good Santa Margarita is this week when
it faces unbeaten St.
Bonaventure (Ventura, CA).
Manatee from
Florida came-in a close second in our first Top 25 with Bergen Catholic
(Oradell, NJ) checking-in at #3 after an impressive 2-0 start to a one of the
toughest schedules in the nation.
BC has already beaten two defending state champs in St. Anthony’s (New York) and Bishop
Gorman (Nevada). Desoto
(Texas) and John Curtis (River Ridge,
Louisiana) round-out our initial Top 5.
So without further a do, here’s our very first Top 25:
1. Santa
Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) 4-0
Hung
72 points on Carson Friday, which set a school record for points. Big showdown this week with unbeaten St.
Bonaventure.
2. Manatee
(Bradenton, FL) 3-0
Coming
off solid 44-34 win against Miami Central that began the season ranked #1 be
USA Today.
3. Bergen
Catholic (Oradell, NJ) 2-0
Have
beaten two defending state champs in St. Anthony’s (New York) and Bishop Gorman
(Nevada)
4. DeSoto
(Texas) 3-0
Solid
42-21 victory of power Euless Trinity, which followed a big win over Oklahoma-power
Jenks two weeks ago.
5. John Curtis
(River Ridge, LA) 3-0
Big
win two week’s ago against defending Florida 8A champ Plant and solid win
Friday against East St. John.
6. Byrnes
(Duncan, SC) 4-0
The Rebels appear poised to head into the postseason
undefeated.
7. Bellevue
(Washington) 3-0
The
Wolverines beat Texas-power Euless Trinity to start the season and now appear
poised to go after their 9th Washington state title in the last 11
years.
8. De La Salle
(Concord, CA) 4-0
The
Spartans survived a scare Friday in 21-13 win over St. Mary’s of Stockton.
9. Trinity
(Louisville, KY) 4-0
29-game
win streak for the four-time defending Kentucky 6A champs.
10. St. Ignatius
(Cleveland, OH) 4-0
The
defending Division I champs have been challenged in four wins
11. Allen
(Texas) 3-0
Two of
the Eagles next three opponents are undefeated through three weeks of games in
Texas.
12. Camden County
(Kingsland, GA) 3-0
After
Grayson’s stunning loss to Parkview on Friday, the Wildcats are the only
Georgia team to find its way into our inaugural poll
13. Hoover
(Alabama) 4-0
The
Bucs 4-0 start includes a solid win over South Panola (Mississippi) in Week 2
14. Cass Tech
(Detroit, MI) 4-0
The
defending Division 1 champs have looked very good after an impressive win over
defending Division 2 champ Brother Rice in season opener.
15. Vista
Murrieta (Murrieta, CA) 3-0
The
Broncos are loaded with offensive talent that was on display in Friday 59-14
win over Redlands East Valley
16. Lake Travis
(Austin, TX) 3-0
The
move to Class 5A will be interesting for the Cavaliers who picked-up a 28-24
victory over Round Rock Westwood Friday.

Moeller (Cincinnati, OH) 4-0
Moeller
will be tested this week when it faces St. Xavier of Cincinnati.
18. Ensworth
(Nashville, TN) 5-0

is averaging over 46 points a game.
19. Narbonne
(Harbor City, CA) 3-0

(Matthews, NC) 4-0
Butler
is going after its three North Carolina big schools title in the last four
years.

(Texas) 3-0

Woodlands.
22. Oaks
Christian (Westlake Village, CA) 4-0
The
Lions haven’t lost a step with Jeff Woodruff taking over for legendary Bill
Redell.
23. Bishop Gorman
(Nevada) 3-1
The
Gaels won’t have time to think about Friday’s loss to Bergen Catholic with a
road trip to Southern California this week to face Servite.
24. Good Counsel
(Maryland) 3-1
With
DeMatha looming two weeks away, GC can’t look past this week’s match-up with
Gonzaga.
25. University
(Ft. Lauderdale) 3-0
University’s
impressive 49-3 win over Cocoa lands them the final spot in our first-ever Top
25.

The New National Polls
by Jeff Fisher
High School Football America
Very rarely does a high school football team begin the year at the top of the plethora of national polls in America and end-up in the same spot at the end of the season.
The road to the "mythical" national championship usually has plenty of twists-and-turns in it.
After a couple of weeks of action, we already have a new #1 in one poll changes in the others.
We at High School Football America have decided that our first poll on September 17th, thus making sure that we sort of have a handle on how teams are looking on the field, rather than on paper. However, with that being said, I applaud our media colleagues that climb-out on that branch before the games.
The biggest change this week is at the top of the USA Today Super 25 where Miami Central falls from #1 after its 35-3 loss to defending Georgia AAAAA champ Grayson over the weekend.

USA Today Super 25 Preseason High School Football Rankings Released
by Jeff Fisher
High School Football America
It's the oldest poll out there, so when the USA Today's Super 25 Preseason Poll is released, everyone takes notice and I'm no exception.
So without further ado...
Miami Central is the newspaper's preseason #1. With a tough regular season schedule that includes fellow Super 25 teams: #3 Manatee, #6 Grayson, and #11 Booker T. Washington, a run of the table to a Florida state championship could result in a wire-to-wire finish atop the Super 25. Manatee was chosen #1 by MaxPreps.com in its Early Contenders Top 25 Poll, which you can here about from my interview with Steve Spiewak back on June 7th. Click here to listen to that interview on High School Football America's national radio show that's heard every Thursday night at 7pm Eastern Time.
So Miami Central begins the year at #1, but there's a lot of football to be played between now and the middle of December, and I would be shocked if the Rockets come through 2012 without a blemish. That being said, Central does return 17 starters from last year's runner-up team.
Florida placed four teams in the Super 25 with defending 8A champ Plant checking-in at #10 in the preseason poll, along with Manatee and Booker T. Washington. Texas also had four Super 25 teams with defending Class 5A Division I champ Southlake Carroll ranked the highest at #8, followed by Katy at #18, Euless Trinity at #20 and Lake Travis at #24.
California, the new home of High School Football America, received three positions in the Super 25. Santa Margarita is the preseason #2, followed by De La Salle at #4 and Vista Murrieta at #22.
Defending national champ Don Bosco Prep from New Jersey didn't make the preseason poll.
Below are the rest of the rankings; you can click here to read all of the Super 25 team capsules.
1. Miami Central (FL)
2. Santa Margarita (CA)
3. Manatee (FL)
4. De La Salle (CA)

21. Eden Prairie (MN)
22. Vista Murrieta (CA)
23. Bingham (UT)
