Lastest High School Football Rankings

by Jeff Fisher
High School Football America

PrepNation.comUSA Today and MaxPreps.com had shuffling in their Top 25 polls this week.

The "funniest" move of the week is by Manatee (Bradenton, FL), which movies up in all three polls after a solid 48-10 win over Plant, which entered the game ranked #2 by PrepNation.com, #6 by USA Today and #11 by MaxPreps.  What makes it "funny" is the fact that Manatee's win doesn't count, because Florida doesn't use its Kickoff Classic games in a team's record...so Manatee and Plant are 0-0.

Below are all three rankings with each seeing eye-to-eye on the nation's top team....Euless Trinity.

New National Prep Football Poll Released With Two New Teams

by Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

The top four teams held their ground in the latest National Prep Football Poll released by PrepNation.com, but look for some changes next week as #1 and #2 is heading for a showdown.

Defending national champ St. Thomas Aquinas (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) has run-the-table so far during the 2009 season, but Friday night the Raiders (3-0) will be tested by Byrnes (Duncan, SC), which was last season's pre-season #1 choice and has a 5-0 record this year...outscoring opponents by over 50-points a game.

As far as this week's poll, Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, NJ) and Lakeland (FL) make strong moves on the heels of very good road wins this past weekend. DBP moves into the Top 5 on the heels of its 35-24 road victory over three-time 6A Alabama champ Prattville on Friday. The Ironmen are now 2-0 with wins (De La Salle & Prattville) over two pre-season nationally-ranked teams.

Lakeland needed overtime to beat De La Salle (Concord, CA), but a win at 1:30 on its Florida clock in California moves the Dreadnaughts from #14 to #9.

Edison (Huntington, CA) beat last week's #6 Servite to move into the poll at #15. Defending Illinois 8A champ Maine South is the other newcomer into this week's rankings.

by Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

Both USA Today and PrepNation.com added two new teams to the latest rankings this week. North Penn (Lansdale, PA) and Rock Hill (SC) enter USA Today Super 25 at #23 and #25 respectively. Phoebus (Hampton, VA) and Mullen (Denver, CO) are the newcomers to the National Prep Football Poll.

Jenks (OK) isn't really a newcomer, but they do re-enter the poll at #21. The Trojans were ranked #12 in the pre-season poll before having a player ruled ineligible before the start of the season. Jenks restored faith by beating arch-rival and last week's #20 Union 27-25.

by Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

With a two week lag between the release of its pre-season Super 25 and the first weekly poll, there are plenty of changes in the USA Today Super 25 released today. Six new teams enter this week's rankings. Not as many newcomers (four) in PrepNation.com's National Prep Football Poll because this week's Top 25 is the website's fourth poll of the year.

However, both do agree that St. Thomas Aquinas is the cream-of-the-crop as both have the Raiders holding strong at #1.

The Woodlands (TX) is the highest debuter at #12 in the USA Today poll after dropping former #3 Katy 31-27. Katy falls to #13. Miami Central (FL) debuts at #16 in the National Prep Football Poll after a solid 34-3 win over Mainland.

St. Thomas Aquinas #1 in National Prep Poll & ESPN Rise Fab 50

by Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

When I first began my television career back in the early 90s, I remember the excitement that ran through the Allentown Central Catholic football program when the Vikings were ranked by USA Today. Yes, back in 1993, the Super 25 meant something...even if it didn't truly mean anything, because...well you know why!

Now, every major media outlet is in on the act. However, I still like USA Today the best, because they've been doing it since 1982.

Tradition means something at The High School Football Huddle!

So with all that being said, let's look at the first couple of polls to be released...ESPN Rise's Fab 50 and Prep Nation. USA Today will release it's Super 25 later.

At least for the pre-season polls, ESPN and Prep Nation are in agreement on #1 and #2. Both polls have the "defending" national champs, St. Thomas Aquinas (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) at the top spot to start the season. The Raiders are followed by Byrnes (Duncan, SC). If all goes according to plan, the Raiders and Rebels will collide on October 2nd in Florida in a nationally-televised game.

There's no surprise when it comes to which states standout in both polls. Texas leads the Prep Nation Poll with four teams in the Top 25, Florida and California landed three teams in the National Prep Football Poll. The State of Washington is smiling with Bellevue and Skyline cracking the Top 10 in the National Prep Football Poll.

In the ESPN Rise Fab 50...California, Florida and Texas each landed seven teams in the Top 50.

Let's start with the National Prep Football Poll, which is America's second oldest weekly poll produced by Jamie DeMoney, who does a great job of keeping fans up-to-date. Below you can learn more about PrepNation.com.

About the National Prep Poll: Compiled weekly weekly since 1987 and distributed by World Features Syndicate and the Associated Press, the National Prep Poll is the nation's second oldest weekly high school sports rankings. Doug Huff of ESPN RISE compiled the rankings from 1987 until 1999. Jamie DeMoney has compiled the poll since the start of the 1999 basketball season. The National Prep Poll is the only high school poll distributed to newspapers and Web sites around the United States by the Associated Press national wire service. The National Prep Poll is the first high school football and boys basketball poll to released in the preseason and during each week of the regular season. Criteria considered for the National Prep Poll rankings are strength of schedule, the ability to accomplish the ultimate goal on a team's schedule (i.e. winning a championship), impact players and performers, a team's coaching and recent tradition.

Jamie DeMoney begins his 10th year compiling the World Features Syndicate/Associated Press National Prep Poll. He has covered high school sports and recruiting for more than 15 years and compiled the National Prep Poll since 1999. DeMoney has also compiled high school football and basketball rankings for Sporting News, School Sports, and RISE. DeMoney was managing editor of American Football Monthly and assistant national editor of All-Stater Sports/Highwired Sports. DeMoney is a graduate of the University of Iowa School of Journalism, and a member of the Football Writers Association of America and the United States Basketball Writers Association.
