Coming into Illinois 8A championship game, Maine South quarterback Charlie Gordo was known for winning games with his strong right arm. However, it was the Vanderbilt-bound QB's legs that carried the Hawks (14-0) to a 41-21 win over Hinsdale Central (11-3). Gordo, who entered the game with over 3,000 yards passing and 37 touchdowns, carried the ball 25 times for an 8A title game record 164 yards and a touchdown.
