7th All-Time Winningest High School Football Coach Un-Retires

It's been quite an off-season for a couple of members of high school football's elite 400-Win Club.

Last month, G.A. Moore, fifth on the country's all-time wins list with 423 wins, resigned from Aubrey High School in Texas.  Monday, George Curry, seventh on the all-time wins list with 413 returned to the game and the school he led to national prominence.

Curry is the new "old" coach at Berwick High School in northeastern Pennsylvania.  Curry replaces Gary Campbell, who was hired to replace Curry after Pennsylvania's all-time winningest coach retired in 2005.

The job opened-up after Campbell resigned reportedly to take a new job in his home state of Massachusetts.

Amazingly last year, three coaches entered the elite 400-Win Club: Corky Rogers (The Bolles School, Florida), Al Fracassa (Brother Rice, Michigan) and Bob Paroli (Seventy-First, North Carolina).

This year it's possible that three more could join the club as you can see from the list below.  Please note there are different sources that use different numbers for coaches, but we believe this is the correct list...or at least as best as we can tell.

Cheesesteaks & High School Football

Before getting into today's first post, I just want to apologize to my readers for a technical snafu by Blogger that caused us to be down for three days.  The good news is everything is back to normal now.

My three-day odyssey to Roseto, Pennsylvania for an inside look at the opening of Pius X High School's 2010 high school football season has ended...for now.

Some of the numbers...65 hours on the ground; 13 hours of video shot; 11 hours of sleep; 3 "flats" (hoagies) from Ruggiero's Market; 2 cheesesteaks at Detzi's Tavern and ONE great memory...with more to come.

Here is the first video from Day 1 of Camp Royal.  It's a 90-second sights-and-sounds piece from the Royals first official practice under first-year head coach Phil Stambaugh, who is a Pius alum and also played in the NFL and NFL Europe.


I will be posting dozens of other video clips and stories at High School Football America over the next two weeks, leading up to the Royals' season opener against Pottstown on September 4th.

High School Football America in Pennsylvania for Opening Day of High School Football

It's 4:52 A.M. Eastern Time and my adrenaline is flowing as I'm up early to catch the first day of high school football practice in Pennsylvania.

When I'm finished with this post, I'm out-the-door of the Hampton Inn in Bethlehem to travel to Pius X High School for the first of the Royals three practices today.  As I've been mentioning since last Wednesday, I will be profiling Pius throughout the season, and it all starts today when the sun rises on the new season.

Camp Royal officially opens at 6:45 A.M. EST when the players, who are spending the first week staying at the school all-day and sleeping in the wrestling room, get there wake-up call.  I'll be there with camera in-hand as the players awake with blurry eyes that will then begin focusing on the 2010 season.

You'll be able to check-out tons of video from the first three days of camp at High School Football America throughout the week.  I should be able to have a quick snippet posted by sometime after lunch...just click on the 2010 Pius X HS Story tab.

Everybody on three...one-two-three...let's go!

High School Football America to give its readers the "Royal" treatment

As I contemplated what I could do special for the 2010 high school football season, one thought came to mind...think SMALL!

Yes, I said SMALL.

You see, as I’ve been telling my readers for the past year, High School Football America is all about covering good stories.  It’s almost like we’re miners looking for those hidden gems of high school football stories that are buried deep beneath national rankings and recruiting stories.

So with that in mind, I wracked my brain for something small that could be turned into something big. 

It didn’t take me long to come-up with the answer.

I wanted to chronicle a small town football team for an entire year to give fans a feel for how the line between a community and its football team blurs, and the team becomes part of the fabric of the community.

But the question was which team?

Once again, it didn’t take long to come-up with the answer.

I just had to look a little north of my hometown of Easton, Pennsylvania to the tiny borough of Roseto…home to the Pius X Royals, a small catholic school with an enrollment of approximately 260 students in 7-12 grades.  The Royals play in Pennsylvania’s smallest classification (Class A). 

That definitely qualifies as small, but what the school and the football program have accomplished through the years in sports is big, including an NFL quarterback in Phil Stambaugh…and that’s where the story begins.

Stambaugh, who just celebrated his 32nd birthday on Tuesday, is preparing to open his first camp as a head coach at his alma mater on Monday, August 16th…and High School Football America will be there with him.

Even after spending time as a quarterback in the NFL and NFL Europe, Stambaugh is your typical Pius X alum…once a Royal, always a Royal.

What seems to make this story feel right is Stambaugh and I have a history that includes me covering him while I worked at WFMZ-TV while he was leading his team to a 1995 District 11 Class A championship, plus his brilliant career at Lehigh University where he spent his four years re-writing school and Patriot League record books.

What appeals the most to me about Pius is how it truly is a family affair for the approximately 1,600 people that reside in the community. 

Like Stambaugh, eight of his eleven assistant coaches attended the “old school” brick school building on 3^rd Avenue.  Heck...Stambaugh’s mom Connie currently is the athletic director at the school.  His dad, Mike, coached football, volleyball, girls’ softball and wrestling at Pius.

Roseto is a little bit like the imaginary TV show bar Cheers…everyone knows your name.

Hopefully, between now and the end of the season, America will know the Pius X Royals.

As you can tell, I'm really working on improving things here at The High School Football Huddle and also High School Football America.

Secondly, we're still collecting story ideas for High School Football America.  We have some good ones so far...the latest being a doctor in Illinois, who has watched over 400 straight games at St. Rita High School in Chicago!

Pennsylvania Player Named Maxwell Football Club's National Player of the Year

Florida recuit Sharrif Floyd of George Washington High School is the Maxwell Football Club's 2009 National High School Player of the Year.

The two-way lineman led GW to its third straight Philadelphia Public League title this past season. The 6-3, 305-pounder will be honored at a March 5th dinner in Atlantic City along fellow Players of the Year...Colt McCoy (College) of Texas and Drew Brees (Pros) of the New Orleans Saints.

Bishop McDevitt junior quarterback Matt Johnson had his hand in six of Crusaders seven touchdowns Saturday in a 49-7 win over Cedar Cliff. According to the Patriot-News, Johnson threw for four TDs and ran for two more as the Crusaders moved to 2-0 on the season.

Woodland Hills found out just how good Ohio football is on Saturday, losing to Steubenville 13-0 in the Friends of Coal Football Classic in Wheeling, West Virginia. The victory was the 62nd straight for Steubenville during the regular season. The last time the Big Red lost during the regular season was in the 2002 season. Fans of nationally-ranked Liberty are hoping that last night is deja vu all over again. For the second straight year, the Hurricanes have opened the season with a loss to North Penn. Last year's 23-15 season-opener loss woke-up the Hurricanes, who didn't lose the rest of the way on the way to the 2008 4A championship. Gatorade Replay..Thanks for the Memories!!

Around 5:30 P.M. CST on Sunday, April 26, 2009...I received a call from my mother, who lives in Easton, Pennsylvania...actually Wilson Borough (my hometown) to be exact.

The call went like this....

Mom - "What was the final score to the game?"

Me - "The Liners won, mom"

Mom - "I know, but what was the score?"

Me - "P'burg 27-12"

The reason for the call was my mom was watching my old TV station, which during it's report gave the winner's name, but not the final score for the Gatorade Replay game that broke 1993's 7-7 tie between the two arch rival that meet every Thanksgiving morning at Lafayette College.

Of course, mom is a little jaded when it comes to reviewing the talent that replaced me when I moved to Chicago, but when she was done making light of the fact that the reporter was remiss in not giving the final score, it dawned on me that...high school football memories are as special as a first kiss!

This game was more than an advertising stunt, and my mom and the rest of the area were treating it as such!

They've play 102-games that counted before Sunday, but none of the 102 may have counted more than Sunday's Replay. It had all the romance of a Harlequin novel as two towns that have a combined population of 40,000 came together to show that the Thanksgiving Day rivalry is more than just a game. It showed the fabric of these two Delaware River communities, and it focused me on my job as America's central database for high school football.

The High School Football Huddle is about everything high school football....all 15,000 high schools and 1.3 million players, plus the cheerleaders and the bands. I promise you that this site will always be about ripping apart the fabric of communities around the country to tell the story of high school football.

Finally, for all of us who have thought, "if I had to do it all over again"...Sunday was a special day! It proved that there's nothing wrong with turning back the clock.

In closing, and using football terms...we should always remember that as time rushes by us, we should consider grabbing each passing moment and realize that the problems we tackled in high school, make very special memories.

Gatorade Replay showed that TIES really do bind.

Phillipsburg (NJ) beat Easton (PA) 27-12 Sunday in the Gatorade Replay game that broke a 7-7 tie from a 1993 Thanksgiving Day game between the Delaware River rivals. The game lived-up to its hype, and went a long way to proving that these two may own America's best high school football rivalry!

The Voice of Easton and Phillipsburg...A Real Turn-Back-the-Clock Guy

Sitting here in Chicago, about 45 minutes from the start of the Easton-Phillipsburg Gatorade Replay game. I'm going to listen to the game on the internet with THE VOICE of the Red Rovers and Stateliners...Dick Hammer.

At 75 years young, Dick is my mentor and friend. However, to tens of thousands, he was the voice on WEST-AM Radio.

Dick's words have painted every hand-off, pass and tackle for these two schools since the 50's. WEST was known as "The Best Little Station in the Nation" for its community-based broadcasts that included not only Easton and Phillipsburg football, but also, basketball, baseball wrestling...YES WRESTLING. Hold-by-hold on the radio!

I spoke to Dick earlier this week, and he was very excited about calling today's game with his long-time sidekick Mike Moore, who also helped me cut my teeth in the news business back in the late 70's.

For those of you who have been following my blog about this game...do yourself a favor and click onto the WGPA radio link below, and make this truly a throwback game by listening to a man, who has been calling sports on the radio for over 50 years. While I love the pictures of TV, there's NOTHING better than an old-time radio broadcast.

While many may have considered Gatorade's idea to Replay the 1993 Easton-Phillipsburg Thanksgiving Day game to break the 7-7 a joke, on the eve of the game, the feeling in the two communities, is no different than it is on Thanksgiving Eve.

Complete with the traditional bonfire, everyone is getting into the sold-out game that will be played Sunday afternoon at Lafayette's Fisher Field.

For the players, there are probably the same butterflies that were felt 15-years ago. For one player, this replay has been a life changer. You can check-out that story from CNN's Reynolds Wolf below.
