Independence was supposed to be challenged in Saturday's 4AA state semifinal by Butler, a team that forced the Patriots to double overtime during the regular season. The challenge never came as the Charlotte school beat Butler 49-23 before 20,000 fans.
Quarterback Darryl McFadden threw for four touchdowns and ran for a fifth in the victory. McFadden was 15-of-20 for 185 yards and carried the ball nine time for another 50. Running back Dequan Leak also had a big game on the ground with 171 yards and a touchdown.
Next Saturday, the Patriots will play Durham Riverside for its seventh straight state title.
