Storied Maine High School Football Rivalry Reduced To A Scrimmage

Maine's high school football season begins next Friday, but don't tell fans of Cony and Gardiner. The two teams, who have met 130 times in a rivalry dating back to 1892, will turn-up for the regular season by scrimmaging each other. However, there is also some sadness, because this will be the ONLY time these two meet this year.

School officials have decided to take the match-up off the regular season schedule because of conflicts caused by Maine's post-season. Last year a well rested Cony team beat Gardiner 32-14 in a game that came just six days after Gardiner's appearance in the Class B state championship game.
