Football's Version of the Triple Crown

by Jeff Fisher
High School Football America

I woke-up this morning thinking about how I could tie-in Super Bowl XLIV with high school football, but with more than just the casual...so-and-so played high school football at so-and-so high school.

My thoughts somehow wandered to baseball and the elusive Triple Crown, which is when a player leads the league in batting average, home runs and RBIs. And no, I'm not like modern day journalists that say it should be RBI without the "s", because they think they are smarter than tradition.
.
Baseball's last Triple Crown winner was the Red Sox Carl Yastrzemski back in 1967. In over 130 years of professional baseball, there's been only 15 Triple Crown winners with Ted Williams and Rogers Hornsby being two-time winners.

Also, I'm not a horse racing fan, so it's version of the Triple Crown doesn't even come to my mind for this little exercise.

Today's goal is to try to figure-out if any football player has won a Super Bowl, a national championship in college and a high school state championship?

My first thought was Peyton Manning.

Surely the first family of quarterbacks was able to accomplish the feat, but then I remembered, Peyton never won a national championship at Tennessee. My research also showed that despite a 34-5 record as a starter at Isidore Newman High School in New Orleans, Peyton never won a Louisiana state football title.

In high school, Peyton played with his brother Cooper, who caught a doezen of his sophomore brother's 23 TD passes.

So after striking out on my first guess, I decided to start with players that have won a Super Bowl ring and a national championship in college. To my surprise, I could only come-up with nine, and one of the eight, Colts running back Joseph Addai will play in tomorrow's game against the Saints.

Joseph Addai - LSU (2003), Indianapolis Colts (Super Bowl XLI)
Derrick Brooks - Florida St. (1993), Tampa Bay Bucanneers (Super Bowl XXXVII)
Tony Dorsett - Pitt (1976), Dallas Cowboys (Super Bowl XII)
William Floyd - Florida St. (1993), San Francisco 49ers (Super Bowl XXIX)
Michael Irvin - Miami (1987) , Dallas Cowboys (Super Bowl XXVII, XXVIII, XXX)
Joe Montana - Notre Dame (1977), San Francisco 49ers (Super Bowls XVI, XIX, XXIII, XXIV)
Joe Namath - Alabama (1964, New York Jets (Super Bowl III)
Ken Stabler - Alabama (1965), Oakland Raiders (Super Bowl XI)
Grant Wistrom- Nebraska (1994, 1995, 1997), St. Louis Rams (Super Bowl XXXIV)

So with a much smaller list, I was able to come-up with the ONLY player to win a Football Triple Crown.

Grant Wistrom is Mr. Championship having led his Webb City High School football team to two Missouri Class 4A titles in the early 90's. In all, Wistrom has won six championships, and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame last year.

What is odd about this journey is the fact that I met Grant back in the early 90's at one of the first national high school football all-star games in Allentown, Pennsylvania. I remember Grant as being a very polite and sincere teenager, who acted a little older than his age.

That's still evident in his charitable work. The Wistrom Family Foundation was created in 2002 to provide pediatric oncology patients a camp experience that is presented in a safe, supportive, happy and medically sound environment.

By the way, Jimmy Johnson (Miami & Cowboys) and Barry Switzer (Oklahoma & Cowboys) are the only two coaches to win a college national championship and a Super Bowl.

In closing this fun little journey, remember it's just me sitting at the computer, so I'm more than willing to get some help from the readers on this one. So if there's someone out there with more knowledge, please email me at jeff@highschoolfootballamerica.com.

Hodgson Vo-Tech's Lucky 13th Win Captures Delaware Division II Championship

Years from now players on this year's Hodgson Vo-Tech team can tell their grandchildren that they were the first team from the first state to ever win 13-games in a season.

HVT captured lucky #13 in thrilling fashion to beat Caravel Academy 24-16 to win the Delaware Division II high school football title. Hodgson did it by scoring two touchdowns and two two-point conversions in the last 3:52.

The game winner came with just 20 seconds to go when quarterback Jamie Treml hit Jamal Merrell with a four-yard touchdown pass.

#17 Don Bosco Beats St. Peter's For Another New Jersey Title

Just like last year's Non-Public Group IV championship game between Don Bosco Prep and St. Peter's Prep, it was a close first half, but in the end, DBP was too much for SPP.

Nationally-ranked Don Bosco won its 24th straight game on the strength of a 28-point outburst in the third quarter that lifted the Ironmen to a 42-14 win. The last team to beat Don Bosco was St. Peter's 22-15 in the 2005 final.

Greenwood Three-Peats Arkansas 5A Championship

Greenwood became the third 2007 Arkansas high school football champion in 2007 to win a state title after losing a regular season meeting with the other state finalist.

Greenwood (12-2) beat Little Rock Christian 27-6 Saturday for the state's 5A championship. During the regular season Little Rock Christian (13-1) crushed Greenwood 44-7.

The title is the third straight for Greenwood.

Holy Cross D's-It-Up To Win New Jersey Non-Public Group II Title

Holy Cross played its Non-Public Group II New Jersey High School Football Championship against Gloucester Catholic without its star quarterback Tommy Reilly, who sat out the game with a high-ankle sprain. So with Reilly and his 64 career TDs on the bench, Holy Cross turned to its defense to be Gloucester Catholic 17-0 and win the school's seventh non-public championship.

The H-C defense limited Gloucester Catholic to just nine yards in the first half and 67 for the game. It also came up with seven sacks of quarterback Mike Calzonetti.

Bluefield Reigns Supreme in West Virgina AA Title Game

57 was Bluefield's lucky number in the West Virginia Class AA championship game against James Monroe (12-2).

Bluefield (13-0) senior quarterback Will Cole threw two 57-yard touchdown passes in the third quarter to bring his team by from a 12-7 halftime deficit and beat James Monroe 20-12. It was the Beavers third Super Six win since 1994.

Asbury Park Captures First New Jersey High School Football Title 23-Years

It took nearly a quarter of a century, but Asbury Park is celebrating its first New Jersey high school football championship since 1984.

Friday night Asbury Park (11-1) beat Keansburg 32-18 to win the Central Jersey Group I title at Rutgers Stadium. It was the second time this year that A-P beat Keansburg (10-2).

Quarterback Will Johnson and receiver Derrell Bell did most of the damage in the championship win as they hooked-up on three touchdown passes.

#5 St. Xavier Tries to Close-Out Great Season With Division 1 Ohio Title

St. Xavier (Cincinnati) hopes to finish off one of the best undefeated seasons in the country Saturday when it plays Mentor for the Division I high school football championship.

So far St. X has run the table against one of the toughest schedules in the country. The Bombers have beaten several top-notch programs such DeMatha (Hyattsville, MD), Trinity (#1 6A team in KY at game time) and backyard rivals Colerain and Elder.

The Bombers have been ranked as high as #2 by USA Today, and enter the game #5 in the latest USA Today Super 25.

Both teams have chips on their shoulders. St. Xavier wasn't able to make it back to the 2006 title game to defend its 2005 championship, while Mentor is back trying to erase the memory of last year's 36-35 double overtime loss to Colerain in the title tilt.

Two players to watch in this one...Mentor quarterback Bart Tanksi, who was recently named Ohio's Mr. Football and St. X running back Darius Ashley, who despite missing several games has rushed for over 1,300 yards.

West Genesee, Bishop Ludden and Rye Win New York High School Football Championships

For the second straight year Monroe-Woodbury came within one win of a state championship. West Genesee beat M-W Sunday 42-21 to win the New York Class AA high school football championship at Syracuse's Carrier Dome.

The win gives West Genesee its first high school football championship, while Monroe-Woodbury finishes runner-up for the second straight season even though it now owns a 36-2 record in its last 38-games.

In the Class C title game Bishop Ludden (12-1) beat defending state champ Dobbs Ferry 21-16. Bishop Ludden was led quarterback Connor Sweeney who passes for 184 yards and two touchdowns.

It was Bishop Ludden's first state championship and the win snapped Dobbs Ferry's 23-game win streak.

Rye won the Class B title beating Chenango Forks 19-12.

Smith Center Wins 4th Straight Kansas Title

For the first time this season, Smith Center (KS) trailed in a football game. And even though Pittsburg Colgan was able to take a 7-0 lead on the three-time Kansas Class 2-1A champs and hold the Redman 27 points under their per game average, it wasn't enough as Smith Center won its fourth straight crown 40-14.

Once again it was the Redman rushing attack that led the way with Braden Wilson picking-up 225 yards on 24 carries and scoring three touchdowns. Quarterback Joe Windscheffel carried the ball 10 times for 179 yards and two scores.

#24 Eden Prairie Repeats as Minnesota 5A Champ

Top-ranked Eden Prairie was challenged by #2 Cretin-Derham Hall in the Minnesota 5A Prep Bowl high school football championship game, but in the end the Eagles ranked #24 by USA Today showed why they now own a 27-game win streak.

Cretin-Derham returned the opening kickoff to take the early lead, but in the end couldn't hang close enough. Eden Prairie is now a perfect 6-for-6 in Prep Bowl after the 50-21 win.

Believe it or not, but Driscoll's (Addison, IL) seventh consecutive high school football championship isn't a national record. In fact, the Highlanders' are only halfway home.

The Highlanders were led by David Schwabe and Tim Franken. Schwabe rushed for 238 yards. Franken finished with 159 yards rushing and five touchdown.

Smith Center has 11 straight shutouts this year and has outscored opponents 804-6. The only points allowed by the Redman came last week in a 44-6 semifinal win over St. Francis.

Galena Captured Illinos 1A Crown

All eyes may have been on Tuscola's Michigan-bound quarterback John Weinke going into the Illinois 1A championship game against Galena, but it didn't take long for Galena QB Gavin Kaiser to get some attention.

Kaiser amassed 362 yards in total offense as Galena won its third state title with a 35-7 win over the defending state champs.

Kaiser rushed for 93 yards on six carries, he was 10-of-15 in the passing department for 145 yards and he also returned two kickoffs for 124-yards, including a 91-yard touchdown return that tied the game at 7-7 in the second quarter.

Stephen Argyle Pushes Win Streak to 67 Straight and Wins Another Minnesota 9-Man Title

Football is a way of life for boys at Minnesota's Stephen-Argyle high school. With an enrollment of 56 boys, 51 of those boys are a member of the football team.

Friday, S-A won its fifth straight Minnesota 9-Man high school football championship beating previously unbeaten Waubun 43-21. It was Stephen-Argyle's 67-th straight win, which is the Minnesota state record.

Joliet Catholic Goes For Record 13th Illinois Title

After a two year absence from an IHSA championship game, Joliet Catholic (12-1) will go after an Illinois state record 13th high school football championship on Saturday when the Hilltoppers play Lemont (11-2) in the 6A championship game at the University of Illinois.

It should be a ground war with both teams having excellent rushing attacks with five runners over the 1,000 yard mark this year. Joliet Catholic features three running backs that have rush for 1,000 yards (Tyler Hudetz 1,561 yds., Brandon Geiss 1,233 yds. and Connor Krisch 1,011 yds.). Lemont leading rusher is Bobby Earnest who's run for 1,771 yards and 27 touchdowns. Quarterback Brett Nagel has rushed for 1,443 yards and 21 scores.

Joliet has one twelve straight since losing its opener to arch-rival Mount Carmel. The Hilltoppers have averaged 46 points a game and 476 yards in total offense per game. Lemont, which is making its first championship game appearance, is averaging 37 points a game and 313 yards per game rushing.
