Sturgis (SD) Ends 79 Game Losing Streak

Over the past couple of seasons, the nation has marveled at high school football win streaks. Of course it all starts with DeLaSalle's (Concord, CA) amazing 151-game win streak that was snapped a couple of years ago. Independence (Charlotte, NC) currently has the longest active win streak at 95 straight.

On Friday, players at Sturgis High School in Sturgis, South Dakota avoided breaking a national record for futility. Sturgis beat Rapid City Stevens 22-20 snapping the Scoopers 79 game losing streak, which dated back to October 17, 1997.

Sturgis scored a touchdown on its first play, a 73-yard halfback pass from Clint Duprel to Ryan Russell.

Stevens took an 8-7 lead in the first quarter, but failed to convert two-point conversions on its next two touchdowns – providing the final difference on the scoreboard.

The Scoopers avoided the national loss streak record of 82 by Glascock County of Gibson, Georgia from 1990-99.
